Ladbrokes Newcastle Cup (G3)

Here's Tears Collects Another NSW Feature Win

By Michael Cowley
He may not boast the record and stature of his older brother, but Here’s Tears continues to gradually build an impressive resume of his own, and he added to that on Friday night at LADBROKES GARDENS with success in the Newcastle Cup.

The brilliant Tornado Tears has won 35 of his 69 starts, captured six wins at Group 1 level, and amassed $1,003,835 in stakes. Giant shoes for any little brother to fill, but Here’s Tears continues to impress in the staying ranks and added another $25,000 to his earnings with Friday’s 41.94s victory.

Registering his 20th win from 58 starts - one of those at the elite level - Here’s Tears has now banked $388,450, in collecting his second feature in NSW in the past two months.

Back in October Here’s Tears - who earlier this year broke the Sandown Park 715m track record of legendary stayer Miata - took out the Group 3 Sydney Cup on Million Dollar Chase Grand Final night at Wentworth Park.

“I think I have had the dog just on 12 months and he has won just on $300,000 in that time,” said trainer Rob Britton.  “You rarely get dogs that do that, and he’s broken a track record and he’s just been a super dog for us to be able to do that.

“He’s lived in the shadow of his older brother but again, if you could get one of them ever few years you would be happy. He has been wonderful for us.”

Jumping perfectly from the one box, Here’s Tears pushed through to take the early lead but surrendered it to Mark Gatt’s Stanley Road on the home turn the first time around when he appeared to not handle the turn.

The pair matched strides from then on with fastest qualifier Let’s See camped on their tail up the back.

Let’s See went for a run under Stanley Road but was disappointed, and swinging for home it looked a race in two.

But the Victorian-trained, NSW-owned Here’s Tears broke away on the home turn, and comfortably held off the late rush from runner-up By Five Helen, and third placegetter Zipping Truvy.

The win was the first for Here’s Tears at LADBROKES GARDENS over the 715m, having finished second at his two previous attempts, the first back in August last year, the next in last week’s heat behind Zipping Truvy.

“He looked really lost last week and he did look a little lost again tonight. He looked like he didn’t handle it that well both weeks,” Britton said.

“He did have an education around Wentworth Park and he has gone well there, he might need two to three looks at a place … and he’s not a railer, so maybe it’s not a track that suits him either.”

Britton will now decide whether to leave Here’s Tears in NSW or bring him home to contest the Group 1 Sale Cup.

“I’ve just got to work out whether to leave him there for a race at Wentworth Park next week (the Group 3 Christmas Cheer).

“The Sale Cup is a Group 1 and you want to go for your Group 1s but while he’s up there, you think maybe I should go the other way and he has gone really well at Wentworth Park. I’ll make up my mind overnight.”
