On The Rocks Comes Out Running

By Jeff Collerson
On The Rocks needed to "come out running'' if she was to win Saturday night's star-studded Ladbrokes Bitches Only final at Wentworth Park and she did precisely that.

Before the race trainer Donna Campbell expressed concern that On The Rocks, who had box eight, might have trouble getting around the wide running and unbeaten Wentworth Park star Vicki's Queen, who drew seven, in the run to the first turn.

But On The Rocks, who had led throughout to win her heat from box one in 29.84, came out "under the lids'' and gave nothing else a chance, stopping the clock at a flying 29.75 for the 520m.

She had posted splits of 5.41 and 13.75 in her heat win but trimmed those figures to 5.36 and 13.71 on Saturday, so it was no wonder she was never going to be beaten.

After the race Campbell said: "On The Rocks did something similar at Goulburn in October, she began pretty well and led throughout to win over 350m one day and five days later absolutely flew out to lead all the way in slightly quicker time.''

Sniffy, who broke through for her first Wentworth Park win on Saturday after being placed in six of 12 previous engagements, would not have been in the race if Richmond had been able to stage a 618m race on Friday.

After Sniffy came from second on the home turn to win by three-quarters of a length in a slick 30.01 - her personal best Wentworth Park time - trainer Michael Hooper pointed out that she had been entered for a middle distance race at Richmond on Friday.

"I've been keen to get Sniffy over longer than 520m and there was what looked an ideal 618m race programmed for Richmond on Friday,'' Hooper said.

"But when I was told the Richmond race would not be going ahead due to a lack of entries, I threw in a nomination for Wenty over the 520m.

"I'm obviously glad how it panned out, especially as it was my birthday on Friday and my family and I had been banking on me winning a race this week to celebrate.''

Moon Line went into her first Wentworth Park outing on Saturday night with three wins from three appearances out of box eight and she maintained her perfect record wearing the pink rug with a last stride victory.

The Ruth King-trained bitch came from third on the home bend to win by a half head from pacemaker Chasing Mavis in 30.29.

After the race King said: "Moon Line is a real box eight bandit and is a tenacious chaser.

"A friend of mine and myself bought her as a pup for $5000 and she is extremely well bred as she is a grand daughter of the former champion stayer Sweet It Is.''

Sweet It Is won over $1 million in stakes so Moon Line has enormous value as a potential brood bitch.

Maldini made amends for a luckless third at his previous Wentworth Park start with a determined win from a tricky box five draw on Saturday.

The Danielle Matic-trained dog handled himself well in the run to the first turn and headed pacemaker Diamantina Rose on the back straight to win easily in 30.02.

"Maldini has taken a liking to Wentworth Park,'' Matic said.

Her mother Ruth said: "Maldini was really unlucky at his previous Wentworth Park run when he finished third after getting smashed on the back straight.''

Incapacitated, who finished fourth in Second Exit's Middle Distance Championship over 600m at Dapto on November 19, had no trouble reverting to sprinting in taking out Saturday's 520m Free-For-All.

The Justin King-trained dog trailed Princess Riot, Chrissie Banner and Lollipop Liz to the home turn but unleashed a powerful finishing burst down the outside of the track to win running away by two lengths.

It was Incapacitated's sixth win in 16 starts and his time of 29.98 compared well with his personal best figures of 29.86.
