Phantom Clyde Headed For Casino Cup

By Jeff Collerson
Phantom Clyde will tackle Friday's heats of the 484m Charcoal Inn Casino Cup following his sensational performance to take out Thursday night's 431m TAB Ipswich Sprint.

Trained by Malcolm Ross at Fairy Hill, near Casino, Phantom Clyde has now won 14 of his 17 races, with Thursday night's Queensland win the dog's seventh in succession.

The consistent speedster also won seven straight races in July and August, with his latest Ipswich win giving Ross a winning Thursday night double at the track.

"On Thursday my staying bitch Jimary Dynamite won a 732m race worth $6300 to the winner while Phantom Clyde's race was worth $8400, so it was well worth the six hours round trip,'' Ross said.

"Phantom Clyde won over 484m at Casino early in his career, winning in the handy time of 27.75 after getting tired and winning by just over three lengths.

"But in that race he really split them up in the middle stages where he led by a huge margin.

"I'll use the Casino Cup series as a stepping stone to eventually getting Phantom Clyde to Wentworth Park to try him over 520m.

"Thursday night was my fifth trip to Ipswich within a couple of weeks because I had also entered Jimary Star for the Ipswich Cup heats on November 5.

"Jimary Star finished fourth but I had trialled my dogs on the previous Monday, raced on the following Thursday, Friday and Saturday, then came back again for the TAB Sprint.''

Rock On John gave Sydney fruiterers and greyhound owners Tony and Giorgio Alvaro their second group one success when he took out the $100,000 NEW ZEALAND Cup at Addington on Thursday.

Trained by DAVE Fahey, Rock On John, bred by another Sydneysider, Michael PHillips, took his record in the Shaky Isles to a remarkable seven wins and two placings from nine starts with his front-running win.

"Rock On John began his career with Melbourne trainer Jason Thompson but after winning his maiden at Sandown and running a couple of placings from five starts we decided he would be better suited in NEW ZEALAND,'' Tony Alvaro said.

"The dog got there two months ago but while DAVE Fahey immediately recognised Rock On John's potential, he had to rush his preparation to ensure he secured a start in the NZ Cup heats.

"Rock On John was in the lowest grade in NZ, but the Cup is for grade five dogs, which is their equivalent of top grade here.

"So DAVE had to race Rock On John every three or four days hoping he could win five or six races in order for him to be certain of gaining a draw in the Cup series.

"He was able to achieve that so it was a big effort by both the trainer and the dog because Rock On John is just 25 months of age.''

The Alvaro brothers, who have run a fruit and vegetable business at Sydney's Flemington markets for over a decade, won a dozen races with Whatta Rebel, an older half-brother to Rock On John.

Their other group one win came 16 years ago with the Jason Thompson-prepared Ben's Fury.

Whatta Rebel and Rock On John were produced by Michael PHillips' brood bitch Go Mini Mouse, whose other offspring includes the Brett Hazelgrove-trained Dam Slippery.

That greyhound's 22 wins have earned over $200,000 prizemoney for PHillips and co-owner David Blench.
