Here Come The Victorians

By Jeff Collerson
Arizona Eyes is the form greyhound of tonight's Ladbrokes Switch Stakes at Wentworth Park but the highly talented greyhound's trainer Robert Britton describes him as "the worst box dog I've ever had.''

Arizona Eyes staged an outstanding last-to-first performance to win over 525m at The Meadows on September 5, working his way into second position at the half-way mark before drawing away to win in near record time of 29.66.

He has box one for his Sydney debut tonight.

"Arizona Eyes is a very fast dog but often just flops out of the starting boxes,'' Britton, who trains the great stayer Tornado Tears, said.

"When he won at his most recent start Arizona Eyes had box eight and I think he goes better drawn wide.

"Having said that, for a dog having his first start at Wenty Park I'm quite happy to see him in box one.

"I'm hoping that the different start at Wentworth Park might help Arizona Eyes get away better.''

Fellow Victorian trainer Matt Lanigan has a big opinion of Arizona Eyes but gives his dog Dark Jedi a good chance from box eight in the same race.

"Dark Jedi doesn't like being pressured by dogs on his outside and has handled wide draws well at his past couple of starts,'' Lanigan said.

"But Arizona Eyes has a massive motor.''

Robert Britton's brother Jeff virtually has three starters in tonight's Where Else But Wenty Free-For-All with Mepunga Pegasus in box six, Wallbanger, trained by his partner Angela Langton in two and Origami Angel, prepared by his foreman Matt Lanigan, in box one.

Wallbanger looks the pick of that trio as he has won nine races and has had Wentworth Park experience, coming from fourth early with a powerful rails run to win in a slick 30.03 on January 24.

Wallbanger had box three in that race and is equally well positioned in box two tonight, especially as Tennessee Tiger, who has drawn three, is a wide runner.

Hardest for Wallbanger to beat should be Ebby Jet Power, who has box four but possesses the early pace required to offset the middle draw.

Ebby Jet Power led throughout to win in a slick 29.93 at Wentworth Park last Wednesday, jumping quickly from box five and winning by eight lengths after posting nippy initial splits of 5.48 and 13.92.

Tonight Ebby Jet Power will be chasing his seventh win in a dozen Wentworth Park appearances where he boasts a personal best 520m time of 29.51, clearly the quickest in the race.

Matt Lanigan is particularly pleased with Origami Angel's rails draw, commenting: "She is in a hard race but is absolutely desperate for box one.''

Canowindra trainer David Grant has "done the hard yards'' to ensure his three starters tonight know they way around Wentworth Park.

Grant has Grant">SANDY Grant in box one in the GBOTA Welcome Maiden, Grant">PREMIER Grant in seven in the wentworthpark.com.au Stakes and Grant">Stormy Grant in the rails trap in the MDC Final 16 October Stakes.

"I have made the nine hours round trip to trial each of them at Wentworth Park for the past couple of weeks,'' Grant said.

"SANDY Grant is well drawn and is better than his form suggests because he has been racing without luck.

"PREMIER Grant is definitely the quickest of my trio but he is up against by far the toughest field while Stormy Grant is ideally boxed and should run a good race.''

Pablo Mouse was sent out a heavily-backed hot favourite for her Wentworth Park debut last Wednesday and she led throughout to win comfortably in a tidy 30.22.

She made full use of box one but ran off the track at the first turn, indicating she could be well suited by her box seven draw in tonight's Punters HQ Coming To Wenty Soon Stakes.

Pablo Mouse faded slightly in the straight last week when she was having her first start beyond 400m so should have acquired extra stamina and be improved by the experience.
