Silent Shadow Springs Stunning Boilover

By Jeff Collerson
Silent Shadow, whose only previous win in nine starts had been in a 453m maiden at Cowra, pulled off the boilover of the year by toppling group one winner Just Terms while making her first appearance over 720m.

Trained at Spring Terrace, near ORANGE, by Shannon Kirby, Silent Shadow was sent out an $81 chance but after disputing the lead for most of the way with Zipping Bram, she got clear near the home bend.

Silent Shadow then held off Just Terms' late challenge to score by a half head in a handy 42.53.

While Silent Shadow's win shocked most punters, trainer Shannon Kirby was not totally surprised.

"Silent Shadow has always been able to run like the wind,'' he said.

"At her first Wentworth Park trial, over 520m, she clocked 30sec flat and ran home in the outstanding time of 11.60.

"Because she had got tangled up back in the field in two 520m races at Wenty in August I decided to throw her into a 720m event, hoping she could get on the lure and show her true ability.

"I wasn't certain she would run the 720m but on her run home time in her Wentworth Park 520m trial there was a good chance she could stay.''

Incapacitated will tackle the Richmond heats of the TAB Million Dollar Chase on September 18 following his smart 29.86 win in a 520m fourth and fifth grade at WP on Saturday.

Incapacitated bungled the start from box one but railed through to be second going through the catching pen and took the lead on the back straight.

"Considering he came out awful his run was pretty good and he deserves a crack at the Million Dollar Chase heats at Richmond,'' Justin King, whose partner Tess Simmons trains Incapacitated said.

King trained a winner himself earlier in the night when the consistent Windsor Rose led throughout in 30.06.

"I was very concerned about Windsor Rose immediately after the race because she got smashed up in the catching pen, but she seemed to have recovered later in the evening,'' King said.

This year's group 1 Peter Mosman Opal winner Lilly Banner gave her trainer Barry Gibbons a winning double when she led throughout in 29.71, fastest time of Saturday's meeting.

Gibbons had scored earlier on the card with Lilly Banner's litter brother Old Mick Banner, who also led all the way before stopping the clock at 30.16 for the 520m.

Aston Zodiac's early speed enabled her to steal a winning break in the middle stages before she held on to defeat the strong finishing Storm Bay by one-and-a-half lengths in a 520m fifth grade in 29.98.

"Aston Zodiac does not run a real strong 520m but when she is clocking splits like she ran tonight, they are always going to have to catch her,'' trainer Geoff Grimwood said.

Aston Zodiac posted extra quick sectional times of 5.47, 13.76 and 17.87 before running home in a mediocre 12.11.

Tapper Keeping notched his fourth win in five starts by leading all the way at his Wentworth Park debut on Saturday but despite winning by a half head in 30.14, the dog will need a clearance trial before racing in town again.

Tapper King jumped cleanly from box one but appeared to glance towards Zambora Zipper, who was on his outside, soon after the start.

"He got a 'ticket' for marring,'' trainer Jason Magri said later.

"Although it happened so briefly, I must admit I've never seen a dog do that so soon after jumping away.''
