Mrs Emgrand Heading for Sydney Cup

By Jeff Collerson
Mrs Emgrand, unraced in 2020, has finally recovered from a chipped bone in a wrist and is back in work with the group 1 Sydney Cup at Wentworth Park in October her goal.

The Luke Azzopardi-trained bitch finished third to Boom Down and Blue Moon Rising in the 2019 Cup final last October before recording a personal best 41.98 in the fastest of her five Wentworth Park 720m wins.

After being beaten a neck when third to Tornado Tears at Sandown in November, Mrs Emgrand was injured at LADBROKES GARDENS on December 6 and has not raced since.

"She has had two 618m trials at Richmond this preparation and so far she is holding up okay,'' Azzopardi said.

"I hope to have her in the Sydney Cup heats at Wenty because she loves the 720m trip there.''

An even more amazing comeback is on the cards with Blabba Mouth, winner of the 2019 Masters Meteor, back in training and raring to go despite turning SIX in June.

Blabba Mouth was given a clearance trial over 400m at Maitland last week and trainer Cheryl Murray was delighted when he clocked a highly respectable 22.76sec.

"That distance is really a bit short for him but he had to start somewhere and now I want to build him up to his more favoured longer distances,'' Murray said.

"He is very happy and injury free and since he has been retired he has missed going to the races, he just hasn't wanted to stay home.

"Blabba Mouth has been running around at home like a three-year-old and perhaps because he has always been an immature sort of dog he obviously doesn't know he is six.

"Last week's clearance trial was his first run out of the boxes since he has been back in work but times he has been clocking in hand-slips at Maitland have been as good as he has ever recorded.

"Both his early sections and run home times have been extra smart.''

Blabba Mouth, who became a huge Wenty crowd favourite last year, has had 81 starts for 27 wins and 25 placings for over $214,000 prizemoney.

Last Wednesday's pair of winners Surprise Fling and Tap Out Sniper was not the first double Rod Metselaar has trained at Wentworth Park but he got special satisfaction because the former's victory was a "bit of a surprise.''

Surprise Fling led all the way in 30.12 while Tap Out Sniper ran down Go Wild Bella in 30.27.

"I gave Surprise Fling a box-to-box trial at Wenty a week earlier and she certainly didn't run the hands off the clock,'' Metselaar said.

"So I was not expecting anything great from her but obviously she was improved by the run because she went super.

"Tap Out Sniper is only having a few 520m races before I step him up in distance again and his time of 30.27 is about as quick as he can go.

"But when I saw him fourth leaving the back straight and then getting a slide into second place on the home turn I thought he would win because he is so strong at the finish.''
