Chrome Can Atone From Wide Draw

By Jeff Collerson
Chrome, a greyhound with first class Dapto 520m form, appeals strongly from box eight in tonight's Ladbrokes Odds Boost Stakes at Wentworth Park.

Chrome won three consecutive Dapto races in slick times of 29.83s, 29.84s and 30.00s before finishing sixth at his Wentworth Park debut last Thursday night.

He bungled the start in the latter race and wanted to get wide from box two so was never in the picture with the brilliant speedster Flying Ricciardo winning in 29.73s.

"Chrome wasn't suited by his inside box last Thursday because he is a wide runner,'' trainer Jodie Lord said.

"He is much better positioned this week but last Thursday's hit-out should improve him as he had not previously seen Wentworth Park, in a race or a trial.''

Trainer Sid Swain has litter brothers Midnight Escape and Night Tracker in tonight's first and second heats of the 520m GBOTA Welcome Maiden and believes both are trialling well enough to win.

"Midnight Escape has more early pace than Night Tracker but is not as talented,'' Swain said.

"Midnight Escape has box three in heat one and is capable of clocking 30.10s or 30.20s if he gets a clear run.

"Night Tracker is badly drawn in box eight because if he had one or two I reckon he could get down to 29.90s.

"He lacks early pace and needs to find the fence but if he gets around the first turn untouched he can run home in 11.60s.''

Among Night Tracker's toughest rivals looms as Tomato Tears, who has box six and is having his first start since falling approaching the first turn at Wentworth Park on August 1.

"He hasn't been back to Wentworth Park since but has had a couple of trials up the straight and there is not a thing wrong with him,'' trainer Chris Perry.

Tomato Tears and his litter sisters Empress Tears and Tapestry Tears, who will contest the 720m expertlongshot.com Stakes, are younger siblings to the champion stayer Tornado Tears.

Tornado Tears has win 32 of 63 starts for over $882,000 in stakes and while his sisters are not in his class, they are in tonight's long-distance race with a chance.

Tapestry Tears, who has box five, has won two from four races while Empress Tears' record is two wins from five appearances.

Trainer Chris Perry said: "There is nothing between my pair but I lean slightly towards Empress Tears in this race.

"I thought her run to finish second to Midnight Flash in pouring rain over 618m at Richmond at her last start on August 9 was a terrific effort.''

Empress Tears gave the winner six lengths' start approaching the home turn but finished brilliantly to go down by less than a length, indicating she could be suited by tonight's longer distance.
