Vindication For Peter With Bland Purr

By Jeff Collerson
Bringelly breeder Peter Spiteri was "over the moon'' when his bitch Bland Purr drew box seven at Wentworth Park on Saturday night and his judgment was vindicated when she not only won by seven lengths, but stopped the clock at 29.62 for the 520m, fastest time of the meeting.

"She jumped well Tonight and I thought that if she got away cleanly, as she has been doing lately, she would be hard to beat,'' Spiteri said.

"Bland Purr really winds up going through the first bend and in a recent box-to-box hit-out I gave her at Wenty she recorded a first split of 5.45, which showed she was going better than ever.

"Tonight's was her 19th win but it was Bland Purr's first for me as her trainer.

"JODIE Lord won 18 races with her but when Bland Purr came in season JODIE sent the greyhound back to me for her seasonal spell and then I put her back into work when that was over.''

Cumbria Belle, who led throughout in 29.71, Sunburnt Highway, who won in 29.77, and Trendy Ethics, who scored in 29.79, also produced their personal best winning WP times on Saturday night.

Sunburnt Highway notched his 25th win at start number 103 and after disputing the early lead with Winlock On Top on Saturday, he gradually gained the upper hand to record his 15th WP win.

"Billy (Sunburnt Highway) turns four on Wednesday so he will then be eligible for Masters race,'' John Richardson, whose wife Judith trains the dog, said after the race.

"He has been a marvellous dog and while he has not won a group race Sunburnt Highway has been in six major finals.''

Trainer Mick Hardman paid tribute to Libby's Fancy's breeder and former owner-trainer Dennis Barnes after she recorded her first WP win on Saturday night.

Libby's Fancy took the lead at the first turn and won by two lengths in 30.01, taking her tally to five wins from 16 starts.

"My client Ray Tanti was keen to buy a potential brood bitch last year so I contacted Dennis and asked him to help us out,'' Hardman said.

"Dennis recommended we buy Libby's Fancy because he reckoned she had the perfect conformation for a brood bitch and was enthusiastic about her breeding because she was an American sire, Lonesome Cry, and had been produced by Fancy Dancer, dam of Dennis' top class race bitch Nangar Diva.

"Libby's Fancy didn't set the world on fire in her first few runs for me so I was happy to let her come in season and breed from her, as that had been our intention all along.

"But then she suddenly started trialling well and she won at Dapto and Goulburn in her two races before Tonight.

"When she comes in season though she will be retired and mated with Fernando Bale and Nangar Rust, the fastest dog in my kennel.''

Liberty Pearl, who clocked 30.03 to break through for her first WP win in six attempts on Saturday night, was only "in town'' because she had been unable to secure a draw at trainer Betty Keene's local track LADBROKES GARDENS.

"Betty and I have been forced to bring Liberty Pearl and her litter brother Storm Bay to WP in recent weeks because we can't get a start with them at home,'' Keene's husband Dennis said.

"Liberty Moon does not have much early pace but like her brother Storm Bay she is very strong at the finish.

"I wasn't too worried about box four Tonight because Liberty Moon runs in a straight line from the boxes, if she draws wide she runs wide and if she is on the fence she rails well.''
