Box 1 To Be No Problem For Unison

By Jeff Collerson
There is no more consistent greyhound in training than Unison and the Michelle Sultana-trained speedster seems poised to enhance his marvelous record after drawing box one in Wednesday night's 520m Ladbrokes Switch Stakes at Wentworth Park.

Unison has been a revelation since joining Sultana's Londonderry kennels and has registered nine wins and three seconds from his past dozen starts.

In his two latest Wentworth Park wins, in the slick times of 29.78s and 29.72s, Unison has come from boxes seven and eight respectively, but his trainer is happy with his rails draw on Wednesday.

"Before I started training him Unison had box one twice at Maitland for a win and a second,'' Sultana said.

"And whenever I trial him on his own I always put him in box one.

"Unison seems to run straight no matter what box he starts from so I can't see why he won't handle box one at Wenty.''
Dual Focus, who has drawn box two, is usually a slow beginner while Lanmor Cutie, box three, tends to get wide so Unison should only need to begin cleanly to lead all the way.

While Unison shapes as Wednesday's best bet, the best value on the card shapes up as Vivarchi, who has box three in the 720m 'Going To The Dogs' On Sale Now Stakes.

Vivarchi has not won since scoring at Bathurst in September and her most recent Wentworth Park win was over 15 months ago but she has a nice draw on Wednesday night.

Vivarchi clocked her personal best Wentworth Park 720m time of 42.65s when she finished fourth to Sorry Scott in a tougher race on Saturday night and trainer Mark Bell said she pulled up well after that event.

"She jumped in front on Saturday but when Sorry Scott charged up on the outside of Vivarchi and pressured her going into the first turn, my bitch pulled back,'' Bell said.

"Vivarchi is a funny little thing in that she doesn't like dogs on her outside crowding her, but she doesn't mind them being on her inside, she will hunt up well when that happens.

"There doesn't seem to be a lot of pace among the dogs drawn outside Vivarchi this week so if she comes out like she did last Saturday she has a good chance.''

Barry Gibbons, who trained his first group 1 winner when Lilly Banner took out the Ladbrokes Peter Mosman Opal on July 11, has three strong chances lining up at Wentworth Park on Wednesday.

Lilly Banner has box one in the 520m Congratulations Ritza Coen Free-For-All, Diamond Banner the rails alley in the Wentworthpark.com.au Stakes (520m) and Chrissie Banner in box two in the Where Else But Wenty Stakes, 520m.

"Lilly Banner has done every thing right since winning the Opal and worked well at home on Monday morning,'' Gibbons said.

"But I'm not over-confident about her chances because she is up against Zipping Zeek in box two, and he is a powerhouse of a dog.

"Diamond Banner has been crying out for box one so I expect her to go well even though I am building her up to go over 600m shortly.

"Chrissie Banner has had a win and a second at her past two Wenty races, both from box six, but I'm not sure how she will handle box two.

"When she had box one in a heat of the Peter Mosman Opal at Wentworth Park on July 4 she got 'smashed' in the early stages.

"Chrissie Banner can be a bit erratic from an inside box so she will need to get away well this week.''
