Zipping Bram Produces a Good Juan

By Jeff Collerson
He didn't clock fastest time of the night but Zipping Bram's near replica of Good Juan's recent astonishing last-to-first win at Wentworth Park was the talk of the track on Saturday night.

The Michael Hardman-trained Zipping Bram was a half dozen lengths behind the second-last dog on the back straight and still fifth on the home bend but not only won, but took out his 520m fifth grade by one-and-a-half lengths.

Zipping Bram covered the 520m in 30.20s, well outside Cumbria Lad's 29.73s time standard for the evening, but his run was breath-taking.

"On the back straight I was disappointed but then, when Zipping Bram took off coming to the home bend, I thought he was going to sneak into a place, and maybe even run second,'' Hardman said later.

"I couldn't believe it when he won running away, it was a real thrill.''

Cumbria Lad continued the winning streak of owner-breeder Steve Fitch's Barcia Bale-Hill Top Belle litter when he overcame an average getaway to lead at the first turn and win his fifth grade in 29.73 for trainer Allan Manwaring.

Training honours on Saturday night when to hobby trainer Michael Eberand, who won the sole 720m event with Sorry Scott in a fast 42.20s before winning the 520m Free-For-All with Ebby Jet Power in 29.78s.

Sorry Scott had been beaten in each of four previous Wentworth Park 720m outings but did clock her personal best 720m time of 42.27s when chasing home Pearl Of Tahiti a week earlier.

"It was important for her to get away cleanly from out in box six so I gave Sorry Scott plenty of box work this week,'' Eberand said.

"She had been racing without confidence recently but put the writing on the wall with her second placing behind Pearl Of Tahiti last week.

"Confidence is a big thing for greyhounds and now she has regained that, Sorry Scott could be capable of stepping up to top grade distance races.''

Ebby Jet Power, a long odds-on favourite, looked in trouble when the old warrior Blue Moon Rising sat behind him and began taking ground off the hotpot approaching the home turn.

But Ebby Jet Power, who dwelt at the start but showed great zip to lead clearly on the first corner, dug deep and held off Blue Moon Rising by a neck.

Ritza Coen, Sydney's most improved greyhound, notched his fourth WP win in five starts inside a month and boosted his earnings to over $46,500 when he came from midfield to win Saturday's $15,000 to the winner Ladbrokes Switch Final in 29.89.

Forners Flame, the first reserve who secured a start from box one when Immediate was scratched, looked all over a winner after setting up a clear lead from box rise but failed by a half head to withstand the powerhouse finish by the Mark Gatt-trained Ritza Coen.

Old Mate Koby maintained his unbeaten Wentworth Park record when he scored his third win in as many appearances at headquarters in a 520m fifth grade for trainer Mick Blissett.

Old Mate Koby's time, 30.06, was .01sec outside his personal best but Saturday's win was the dog's best at Wentworth Park.

Riley's Mariah, who had box one, jumped ahead of Our Mate Koby, who drew three, and Blissett's greyhound had to work hard to head off the early leader going through the catching pen.

"I like the way Our Mate Koby gets down in the starting boxes, he puts his forefeet at the front of his box and doesn't move as he waits for the lure to come around,'' Blissett said.

"And I also like the way he takes off going through the first turn and the pen.''

Good Juan's litter sister Dawn Juan led throughout in Saturday's opening event, covering the 520m in her fifth grade event in 30.05.

After the race trainer George Borg said: "I'm obviously very happy to see her win but am a bit perplexed why she has lost her early speed.

"She used to run a first split at Wenty of around 5.46s and tonight she clocked 5.60s.

'Maybe she has been chatting to Good Juan, her brother, who isn't renowned for his early brilliance.''
