Bill's Bombshell Does It Again At The Gardens

By Jeff Collerson
Greek Bombshell broke the LADBROKES GARDENS 272m record for the second time in less than a month on Friday but trainer Bill Marmara still has not met the greyhound's owner Louis Marie.

Greek Bombshell has been in Marmara's Gunnedah kennels since May and after producing a sizzling first split of 4.17 to win in record time of 15.28 at LADBROKES GARDENS on June 19 she reeled off an initial section of 4.15 before clocking a stunning 15.20 on Friday.

"She will be nominated for a 340m race at Gunnedah on Thursday,'' Marmara said.

"Her previous trainer asked me to take her in May and while I have obviously talked to her owner, who lives in Sydney, I have never met him.

"Greek Bombshell has won over 400m at Richmond and 431m at Gunnedah so she can go beyond really short courses.''

Marmara, 66, has been a trainer for 35 years, moving from the Sydney suburb of Merrylands to Gunnedah seven years ago.

"I have eight greyhounds in work after having retired my good bitch Evie's Best, who is due to whelp her first litter, to Aston Dee Bee, on August 1,'' Marmara said.

Evie's Best became a local legend in Gunnedah after compiling a remarkable record of 44 wins and 47 placings from 122 starts.

Classy Ethics gave Sydney owner David Smith and Queensland trainer Jeff Crawford their first group 1 winner in those roles when she led throughout to take out Thursday night's TAB Queensland Cup final over 710m at Albion Park.

Having her sixth start and recording her third win since joining the kennels of former Sydneysider Crawford, Classy Ethics, who won her heat in 41.83, stopped the clock at 41.77 to win the final.

Crawford, who owned Leeroy Rogue when that greyhound won the group 1 Hobart Thousand while in the care of Tasmanian trainer Debbie Cannan, said: "Classy Ethics is my first group 1 winner as a trainer and has given David his first success in that status after having a few group 1 finalists.

"When COVID-19 struck I realised there would be a restriction on which greyhounds would be permitted to come to Queensland for the winter carnival at Albion Park.

"So I started searching for a prospective NSW stayer to bring up here before the border closed in order to be prepared for the Queensland Cup.

"Sydney's Ray Webster is a close friend and after I told him I had been impressed with Classy Ethics when she finished second over 618m at Richmond on May 8, he advised me to contact her owner-trainer David Smith

"When I approached David he didn't hesitate in allowing me to pick up Classy Ethics to set her for the Cup series and he has been so easy to work with and so amenable to my suggestions that winning this race for him has given me a real thrill.''

David Smith added: "Jeff Crawford wanted a prospective stayer from my kennel but his original preference was for Classy Ethics' kennelmate Look Fancy Nancy.

"But I explained she had been promised to a Melbourne trainer and I had to twist Jeff's arm a little to get him to take Classy Ethics instead.

"It was so exciting to win the Cup at Albion Park last Thursday as I was at Dapto with my family and my mother Helen screamed the place down watching Classy Ethics win the Queensland race.

"I think a lot of people were wondering what she was carrying on about because mum is a pretty good grandstand rider.''

Meanwhile David Smith's talented sprinter Freakish Ethics, potentially the best greyhound in his kennels, notched his fourth win from his past six starts as a $1.50 favourite over 440m at Goulburn on Friday.

"I now have to get him accustomed to going around two turns so will take Freakish Ethics to Dapto or Richmond before getting him ready to make his first Wentworth Park appearance,'' Smith said.
