More Group 1s the Target for Thompson

By Jeff Collerson
Crack Victorian trainer Jason Thompson is rarely without a starter in Group 1 Sydney races and rates NSW-owned Fire Legend the pick of his four entries in Saturday night's Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic and Ladbrokes Peter Mosman Opal heats at Wentworth Park.

Fire Legend, raced by his breeder, NSW owner-trainer Mark Moroney, has box six in heat three of the Classic.

"He is real race dog,'' Jason Thompson said of Fire Legend

"While he can be hit or miss from the boxes, he is going extra well and his win in a Free-For-All at Sandown last week was massive.

"Also in his favour is that he has raced at Wentworth Park so he knows his way around the track.''

Aston Silk created a huge impression at her Wentworth Park debut on January 17 when she led throughout from box one to win a heat of the group 1 National Futurity in a slick 29.98s before finishing down the course from a wide draw in the final a week later.

"I'm not sure if she is going quite as well as when she won her Futurity heat but she warranted a trip back to Sydney because I figured the fields in the Peter Mosman would not be as strong as those for the Vic Peters,'' Thompson said.

"Aston Silk has won six of 21 starts so will be among the most experienced greyhounds in the Opal heats and that is always a big help.

"You can forget her seventh at The Meadows last Saturday because she got pole-axed as soon as she came out of the starting boxes.''

Western Australia's best sprinter Tommy Shelby, who trialled a brilliant 29.63 at his first look at WP last Saturday, has box seven in heat two of the Vic Peters and trainer Steve Withers is disappointed with that draw.

"He is a railer and sometimes when he gets too Fired up Tommy Shelby wants to jam up to the left in the run to the first turn,'' Withers said.

"But he will go around dogs and has won twice from box seven, but it is a brutal draw in what is definitely the toughest heat of the meeting.''

Catch The Thief, who defeated Tommy Shelby in an epic duel at Cannington on June 13, also trialled brilliantly at Wenty last week and has box two in heat one of the Vic Peters.

"I'm happy with the draw although Catch The Thief can begin from any box,'' trainer Matt Clark said.

"When he jumps Catch The Thief usually gets one or two dogs off the rails but then he will run straight to the first corner.

"Since his fast box-to-box trial at Wentworth Park last week I have given him a box-to-box hit-out at The Meadows on Monday and he absolutely flew.

"He clocked splits of 5.03 and 17.60 and they are sizzling times.''

Queenslander Waddling Witch, now with Newcastle trainer Geoff Sattler, should only need to reproduce her Wentworth Park trial figures from last Saturday to lead throughout in heat four of the Peter Mosman Opal.

Waddling Witch clocked blistering early splits of 5.41 and 13.80 before covering the 520m in 29.91, and it seems only a bad start from box one can bring her unstuck on Saturday.
