Good Juan? No, Unbelieveable Juan!

By Jeff Collerson
Forner's Flame ran the fastest time of the night, while Vamos Penny, Ritza Gloria and Aston Lee won the $10,000 to the winner feature races, but talk of the track at Wentworth Park on Saturday night was Good Juan's amazing last-to-first performance.

Having his first start from an injury-enforced spell and racing over a less than suitable 520m, Good Juan came from a distant fifth at the top of the straight to win a fifth grade in a smart 29.92.

The Harry Sarkis-trained dog, bought earlier this year by Seymour (Victorian) owners Linda Edgerton and Bronte Kumm, Good Juan ran home in a spectacular 11.38s, just .05s off the record finishing time at Wentworth Park.

After being eight lengths behind the field at the first turn and 15 lengths off the lead on the back straight, the $120,000 purchase sprouted wings in the straight to win by a length.

Time honours for the meeting were with Forner's Flame, who led throughout to win her 520m fifth grade by two lengths in 29.68s.

After the race trainer Sergio Forner said: "When she finished sixth, after getting knocked down early in a similar race at Wentworth Park last week, Forner's Flame was having her first race for a month but there had been nothing amiss with her.

"To be honest I mixed up the dates of the group 1 Peter Mosman Opal and was working her along in preparation for that race, which I thought was on earlier than next week's heats.

"So while Forner's Flame wasn't racing, she was doing as much work in trials as when she is contesting races, and the Peter Mosman Opal heats are still her goal.

"She got wide at the first turn tonight but she has always done that.''

Vamos Penny, a half sister to Poco Dorado, Blue Moon Rising and Veloce Nero, ran down Nangar Gold to win Saturday's Ladbrokes Magic Maiden final.

Trainer Kerry Drynan won the same race just over a year ago with Timeless Moment and Vamos Penny went into Saturday's final as fastest qualifier.

After the race Kerry's mother Doreen, who trained the greyhound's dam Chica Destacada to win a National Sprint Championship, said: "When the covid-19 happened we eased up on all our dogs and had them all vaccinated.

"That's why Vamos Penny did not race until her Magic Maiden heat win, but Kerry has always been bringing her along slowly with this race in mind.''

Mark Gatt, who trained a winning treble at Wentworth Park a week earlier, took out training honours again, landing a double with Vouchers in 30.12s and with Ritza Gloria in the $10,000 to the winner Ladbrokes Thank You Owners Final in 29.72s.

Aston Lee produced a top trial for next Saturday night's heats of the group 1 Vic Peters Classic at Wentworth Park with an all-the-way win in Saturday's $10,000 for first Ladbrokes Thank You Trainers final.

Aston Lee had finished third at his Wentworth Park debut in the June 20 heats but showed the benefit of that experience to clock sizzling splits of 5.40s, 13.75s and 17.84s in winning Saturday's final.

"Dad was not confident Aston Lee could get across to the lead from box seven so this was a pleasant surprise,'' trainer Jason Mackay's daughter April said later.

Biggest plunge of the night came unstuck when Ritza Fire, who firmed from $6 to $2.40, was run down and beaten a half length by Magical Road in 29.92s.

Troy MacDonald, who handled Magical Road for the dog's trainer, his mother-in-law Lorraine Atchison, said: "This dog is very talented but he bungled the start last week.

"We kept him on the lead this week hoping being fresh might help him jump better and show more speed.

"We rolled the dice doing that because Magical Road is so full-on all the time but the gamble paid off.''
