Nangar Chasing a Ladbrokes Super Series Double

By Jeff Collerson
Nangar Silk will be chasing her second Ladbrokes Super Series win in less than three weeks when she exits box seven in Thursday night's $7500 to the winner 400m Maitland final.

The DAVE Irwin-trained bitch won the corresponding event from the same box at Grafton on May 30, and goes into the Maitland run-off as fastest qualifier after winning her heat last week from box two in 22.21sec.

Irwin trains Nangar Silk for western districts breeders the Barnes family, who race Nangar Freedom, winner of the $7500 to the winner Ladbrokes Super Series over 450m at Bathurst on Monday.

Family patriarch Dennis Barnes trains Nangar Freedom, who prevailed over the Darren Sultana-prepared Peek's Angel.

Sultana gets his chance at Maitland when he rugs up Highly Effective in the $6200 to the winner Heddon Greta Free-For-All over 565m

Highly Effective sprang a surprise with an all-the-way win over 520m at Wentworth Park on Saturday night in a sizzling 29.66, clearly fastest time of the meeting.

The dog has drawn box two at Maitland and while Sultana said Highly Effective "likes to use a bit of the track'' he is happy with the inside alley.

"From the 565m boxes at Maitland I am satisfied seeing Highly Effective drawn near the fence,'' Sultana said.

"He has not raced over the 565m trip there but knows his way around the course as he has raced over 400m at Maitland

"He pulled up well after his win at Wenty on Saturday and if he can repeat that sort of run he will be hard to beat.''

Chevy Royale, fastest qualifier and early favourite for Thursday's Ladbrokes Maiden Final at Maitland, will have to be scratched due to a "lump on her stopper bone.''

Chevy Royale made a stunning debut to win her 400m heat last week in 22.34 but trainer Michael Manuel said he has decided against risking aggravating what at present is only a minor injury.

"Initially I was told she would be fine by Thursday but when my veterinary surgeon had a look at the stopper bone on Tuesday he said it was not worth making the problem worse just to win one race,'' Manuel said.

"Chevy Royale is only 22 months old but has been unlucky so far.

"We were preparing her for the group 3 Magic Maiden at Wentworth Park in late March but when we trialled her at Wenty we were a bit disappointed with how she went.

"She was gasping after the trial and it turned out she had tonsillitis so we were advised to have the tonsils taken out.

"Chevy Royale is a smart bitch and at her very first 400m trial at LADBROKES GARDENS she clocked 22.60 and since recovering from the tonsillectomy she has trialled a quick 15.98 over 280m at WP.

"My wife Jody and I bred Chevy Royale from Cop A Sling, who has been a terrific producer.''

Cop A Sling's first litter included Steelcity Boxing, a winner of eight from 25 starts, while her second litter comprised Rockin' Georgia, who smashed the Gosford 388m record on debut in January, 2019.

"Cop A Sling's fourth litter, sired by Barcia Bale, are currently being educated by Johnny Martin at Casino,'' Michael Manuel said.
