Three wins in a week for the old girl

By Jeff Collerson
Kulu Zipster turned four in January but the John Clarson owned and trained bitch is racing with rare zip and when she won at Lismore on Tuesday night she notched her third win in a week.

Kulu Zipster scored over 420m at Lismore on May 12 when sent out as an $11 outsider before winning again four nights later at Grafton, this time at $4.60 and covering the 305m in 17.73.

On Tuesday, proving showing how much she thrived on racing, Kulu Zipster won again over 420m, this time as an $8 chance, stopping the clock at 24.07, fastest time of the meeting.

"She is on fire at the moment,'' Clarson, who trains a team of 12 with his partner Kim Gooding at Bentley, between Lismore and Kyogle.

"Kulu Zipster's career has been interrupted a few times due to wrist problems but we seem to be on top of that now,

"But I spend a lot of time daily giving her magnetic field therapy and massaging her with an ultrasonic machine, as well as making long strolls with her, because she loves walking.

"When I get her out of her kennel in the morning though she drags me towards the back of our station wagon but I'm not sure if she wants to go to the races or just likes riding the car.''

Clarson, 77, has been a trainer since he was 22, and has been using the "Kulu'' prefix for most of his greyhounds over the past 12 years.

"Kim, my partner, is a nurse, and many years ago the husband of one of her workmates built a 100 foot steel schooner and invited us to watch it being launched,'' Clarson said.

"The name 'Kulu' was painted in bright blue on the side of the schooner and I really liked the sound of it.

"I was told it was a native name signifying a new venture or new beginning so I decided then and there to start giving that tag to all my greyhounds.

"I've been fortunate enough to have a lot of handy 'Kulu' dogs over the years but the best was probably Kulu Spirit.

"He had 104 starts for 27 wins and 29 placings, winning over 720m at Wentworth Park and 710m at Albion Park for me before I sent him to Robert Britton in Victoria.

"Kulu Spirit then won over 715m at Sandown and 725m at The Meadows with his winning career extending from the end of 2005 to the beginning of 2009.''

Clarson's current "Kulu'' greyhound, Kulu-zipster">Kulu Zipster, will be chasing her fourth successive win when she contests race 11 over 407m at Grafton on Saturday.
