Not unbeatable but very hard to beat

By Jeff Collerson
Surprise Fling clocked an impressive 22.60s in her last start all-the-way win at Richmond from box eight but trainer Leo Vanderburg believes she is unsuitably positioned in box seven on Wednesday night.

At her most recent run Surprise Fling began brilliantly and was able to cross to the rails from box eight but Vanderburg is concerned she could find trouble if she does not "nail'' the start again in the 400m South Windsor Butchery Stakes.

"She is flying and would have been unbeatable from box one or two but Surprise Fling does want the fence badly,'' Vanderburg said.

"I have always had a big wrap on this bitch and if she leads she should win but she will have to ping the lids again if she is to get across from box seven.''

Vanderburg, a local trainer who is enjoying an outstanding year, is happier about the draw for his other smart short course bitch Pamela's Girl, who has box three in the 400m Ladbrokes Cash In Stakes.

"I was hoping she would get one, two or three because she also wants an inside alley,'' Vanderburg said.

"When she won at Richmond from box one in late April Pamela's Girl recorded 22.71 but is capable of going a bit quicker because she has trialled 22.60 there.

"She is not a brilliant beginner but stands placidly in the boxes and is reliable at the start.''

Garry Frazer, who trains both thoroughbreds and greyhounds with plenty of success, is hoping an unusual training regimen will help Winking Nick win "first up'' over 535m in Wednesday night's Greyhounds Product Direct Stakes.

Winking Nick, who is expected to be the pacemaker after drawing box one, has registered two wins, a second and a third from his past four starts, over the shorter Richmond 330m and 400m trips.

"I can't be certain he will see out a strong 535m but he has had enough work for him to be fit enough to do so,'' Frazer said.

"I train him by galloping him from the 2000 metre shute on the Hawksbury thoroughbred track, which has a straight run of around 1000m.

"Winking Nick does about 600m a week down that straight and he has also had a couple of post-to-post slips at Richmond where his times suggest he will be competitive this week.

"Wednesday's race over 535m, which is a hard run, will be a good gauge as to whether he will handle the 520m at Wentworth Park.

"I am keen to get him to Wenty when the city track reopens next month.''

His Ticking, who has had a win, a second and a third from his past three starts at Wentworth Park, resumes after a spell from box three in Winking Nick's race.

Paul Bigeni, who celebrated his 83rd birthday last Saturday, is His Ticking's trainer and said he has been conditioning the dog with straight track galloping.

"He hasn't raced for two months but box three should suit him because he wants an inside alley,'' Bigeni said.

"After his third at Wkntworth ParP on March 18 there was a virus going around so I gave His Ticking a short break and have got stuck into him over the past fortnight.

"But he has not been trialled over 535m at Richmond so he could be slightly short of a hard run.''

The CHRIS Little-trained duo Weemala John and Weemala Leo look hardest to beat in the Greyhound Products Direct Stakes and the South Windsor Butchery Stakes.

Weemala John is well drawn out wide in box six and has won at WP in a slick 30.03 and in 30.51 while Weemala Leo should also handle his box six draw and is a 22.78 Richmond 400m winner.

Best bet on Wednesday should be the perfectly drawn Hartley Entry, who is resuming from a short let-up out of box eight in the 400m Bernipave Stakes.
