Peter has a week to remember

Peter Akers, a recently retired printer, completed a week most trainers only dream about when Rum Chaser scored at LADBROKES GARDENS on Friday.

Akers, 60, who has been a trainer for four decades, got the ball rolling when Ferrari Blaster won at Gosford on May 4 and followed up with his first ever treble at the same track 72 hours later.

Ferrari Blaster won again on Thursday while Akers was successful at the same meeting with Piper Archer and Fab Blonde.

Piper Archer and Fab Blonde are 20 months old daughters of Akers' former brilliant front runner Leggy Blonde, who chalked up 22 wins and 23 placings from 95 races.

That meeting represented a good night's work for the Greta (Hunter Valley) trainer as he went home with $5000 after Piper Archer had earned an additional $1700 after being drawn out as the GBOTA "jackpot'' dog.

"I have had plenty of winning doubles but Thursday's was my first treble,'' a jubilant Akers said.

"I became involved with greyhounds through being a school friend with Brett Pickett, whose father Noel was a successful trainer and Studmaster.

"When Noel was setting up his famous 007 Stud at Branxton, I worked for him and he taught me everything I know about training greyhounds.

"My first greyhound, Groper's Regret, was originally trained for me by Noel and later I got some hands-on experience training her myself.

"Groper's Regret won her first seven races in succession, all at Singleton, and when she won a heat of the Wyong Oaks we backed her from 33/1 ($34) to 5/1 ($6).

"Ferrari Blaster was having his first start since recovering from a hock injury when he won at Gosford last Monday but did the trick again there on Thursday.''

Noel Pickett, now 86, was delighted to hear of his "protege's'' success.

"Having a good week like that could not happen to a nicer bloke,'' said Pickett, who trained the former Harold Park sprint champion Little Blade.
