Embye ready to go the distance

By Jeff Collerson

Embye, whose 41.88sec win at Wentworth Park almost 11 months ago is among the fastest 720m times semaphored at headquarters, looms as tonight's best bet when he returns against just four rivals in the Ted's Lounge Stakes.

Embye had broken the Temora 570m record before posting his sensational near record time over 720m in April but sustained a cracked hock and was sidelined in July.

The Ruth Matic-trained talent has box four in tonight's sole long-distance event but should relish having vacant boxes in three and five.

The dog proved he suffered no lasting effects from the hock injury when he won over 520m at WP on October 26 in 29.40, another near record time, and proved his fitness with a strong finishing win over 630m at Nowra on February 24.

While Embye has a reputation for finding trouble in his races, trainer Ruth Matic said: "Surely he can keep out of bother in a five dog field.

"Since his Nowra race has had a trial over 590m at Bulli and he went very well.

"I gave him a hit-out there last Saturday night and while the electric timing malfunctioned, a reliable clocker who recorded his time assured me Embye went super.''

Best value bet tonight should be Benkennie Chic, who has drawn box one in race five, a 520m Masters event.

Benkennie Chic ran home strongly when fourth to Sunburnt Highway in a slick 30.02 at WP on Saturday night and will appreciate the move from box seven in that race to the rails draw tonight.

"She loves box one, Benkennie Chic has won five of her seven races from that draw,'' trainer Peter Mantach said.

"She has not had a lot of racing lately because she injured a hip support and then, when she was ready to return to the track, she came in season.

"But that's all behind her now and I expect her to go extra well from the inside alley.''

Another greyhound expecTed to make full use of box one tonight is the JODIE Lord-trained Ritza Donald, who will wear the red rug in race three, a 280m fifth grade.

Ritza Donald has not raced over 280m at WP but won his first two starts at the track, both over the 520m journey, recording a personal best time of 30.03 on November 29.

The dog recently resumed from a spell and was desperately unlucky when second, from box eight, over 297m at Dapto at his most recent outing on February 27.

Ritza Donald bungled the start in that event and came from last early and third in the middle stages to be beaten in a tight photo-finish.

He is positioned to get the run of the race tonight as Caeden's Control, who has drawn box two, is a wide runner who should give Ritza Donald plenty of room in the charge to the first corner.

National Futurity winner Zipping Veyron will be favoured to notch her sixth straight win when she contests tonight's Glorious Golden Easter Egg Stakes, a 520m third and fourth grade.

Zipping Veyron's middle draw is not expecTed to be a problem as she has won four of her five races while wearing the yellow rug.

The Jason MACKAY-trained greyhound was a surprise omission from the fields for last Friday night's Ladbrokes Richmond Oaks heats but there was nothing wrong with the greyhound.

"The Richmond 535m trip is too hard a run for her,'' trainer MACKAY's daughter April said.

"Zipping Veyron goes too hard early and if dad had put her in the Oaks he was worried it might have taken too much out of her.''
