Canine Coronavirus Case Updates

By GRNSW

Following the recent confirmation of two cases of the Canine Coronavirus in the Northern Rivers of NSW, Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has confirmed that they are not related to the outbreak of Covid-19 Coronavirus causing respiratory illness in humans.

The Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission (GWIC) released a statement outlining that affected greyhounds from the properties in question in the Northern Rivers are to be quarantined for at least 10 days.

Despite Canine Coronavirus not being related to the Covid-19 Coronavirus seen in humans, it is key that owners, trainer and breeders remain vigilant at this time, practicing good hygiene methods which include disinfection of all trailers and transport, boots, bedding, muzzles, leads and other equipment that may pose a risk of infection to other greyhounds.

GWIC are appealing to all greyhound trainers to be vigilant in monitoring the health of their greyhounds, especially following racing in the Northern Rivers and in QLD.

GRNSW and GWIC will continue to monitor the spread of canine coronavirus on a daily basis and will undertaking continuous risk assessments with further strict controls to be introduced if deemed necessary.
