Leading Hunter Valley trainer Jason MACKAY collected his third National Futurity trophy on Friday night at Wentworth Park, when ZIPPING Veyron showed again the value of early speed in big races.
ZIPPING Veyron joined 2013 Futurity winner Sometimes Speedy and 2015 Futurity winner Zipping Midge as winners of the feature for MACKAY. He also won last year’s Golden Easter Egg with ZIPPING Veyron’s half-sister Zipping Bailey.
Showing great speed out of the boxes, ZIPPING Veyron was able to dart to the lead, run some smart sectionals, and with the winning post arriving at the right time, she was able to then hold off a late finish from an unlucky Wild Flyer, to snatch the win in 29.95s. MACKAY also trained the third placegetter, Aston Maeve.
“That’s how you do it,” MACKAY said after the win. “Straight to the front. She’s a brilliant beginner that little bitch and she’s got those blinding sections, and that plays a bit part in every race, let alone group 1 races.
“You could see the burn she puts on and she pinched a break up the back. She’s not overly strong, but she’s a great little chaser.
“Her mother (ZIPPING Willow) was a star, so it doesn’t surprise me she is doing what she’s doing.”
The victory took ZIPPING Veyron’s tally to 11 wins and a second from 16 starts, and her prizemoney climbed beyond $100,000 with the victory. She has also now won eight of her past nine starts.
“She’s a pretty special little bitch this one,” MACKAY said. “It’s her first preparation and she’s won 11 out of 16, but she’ll will a few more too with that early speed.”
