Simon says go for the National Derby heats

By Jeff Collerson

Simon Told Helen, who took out the group 1 Silver Chief Classic at The Meadows on January 4, recorded sensational sectional times in a solo trial at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Trialling over 520m in preparation for his Sydney debut in Friday night's National Derby heats at Wentworth Park, Simon Told Helen produced splits of 5.38, 13.80 and 17.93 in his 29.84s hit-out.

His litter brother Who Told Stevie, who will head into the heats of the Group 1 Paws Of Thunder on Saturday night, was equally impressive, clocking 5.50, 13.78 and 17.86 before stopping the clock at 29.83s.

Who Told Stevie appeared to knuckle over at the start and that accounted for his slower first section.

"Simon Told Helen does have superior early speed but if I trial them together, Who Told Stevie would run down his brother nine times out of ten,'' trainer David Burnett said at Wentworth Park.

THERE have not been many more popular winning doubles by a trainer than the brace of victories registered by Jenny Brown's greyhounds Majestic Beauty and Fabrelass at Dapto on Thursday night.

Majestic Beauty won a 520m maiden event in 30.62s while veteran Fabrelass clocked a sizzling 29.99 in taking out a masters' event over the same course, notching her ninth win.

Reason Brown's winners were acclaimed by rank and file trainers is that 11 months ago the popular Pheasants Nest-based trainer suffered a debilitating stroke.

"Yeah, a few people came up to me after the Dapto wins and said they were glad to see me back training winners,'' the modest Brown remarked.

"I plan to nominate Fabrelass for a masters’ race at Wentworth Park on Wednesday while I was especially thrilled for Majestic Beauty to break through for her first win because I picked her out when she was one day old.

"Her breeder John Boreland had a litter for sale and I was keen to buy one as they were by Fernando Bale from Disputive, who is a litter sister to Ritza Lenny.

"But I only wanted the white and blue bitch, now racing as Majestic Beauty, and John agreed to sell her to me.

"To be honest Majestic Beauty did not show much talent when I first put her into work but she is gradually improving.

"Fabrelass and Majestic Beauty are the only greyhounds I have racing, although I have another promising greyhound who has done well in performance trials.

"I have a heart monitor implanted and am on blood thinning tablets and blood pressure medication, but apart from that I am going okay.

"My left arm is not the same as it was before the stroke and even when I pat one of my dogs it feels a bit strange, but otherwise I am pretty good.''

CLAUDIA Allen, who, with husband George, trained the former outstanding sprinters Mullyallan and Railway Road, has passed away on the Gold Coast after a long illness.

Meanwhile popular trainer Frank Daros is on the sick list and is currently in Liverpool Hospital.

Due to his health problems Daros recently arranged for another trainer, Ray Lacava, to assist with training his dogs, and his "offsider'' had instant success.

Lacava, deputising for Daros, won a 330m maiden at Richmond on Friday night with the Frank Daros-trained Ivy Izmir, and also took out a 330m performance trial with Rhonda's Izmir.
