Boom Victorian to trial at Wenty on Saturday

By Michael Cowley

Brilliant sprinter Simon Told Helen and his dynamic brother Who Told Stevie, will trial at Wentworth Park on Saturday night in preparation for next Friday’s heats of the Group 1 National Derby.

While Hooked On Scotch and Friday night’s Group 1 Gold Bullion winner at Albion Park Sennachie are considered the two best greyhounds in Victoria, the boom dog on the scene is DAVE Burnett-trained Simon Told Helen.

Simon Told Helen already has accumulated 10 wins and three second placings from 15 starts, and his prizemoney is a staggering $258,605.

He has won his last five in succession since being run down in a heat of the Group 1 Melbourne Cup by eventually Cup winner Whiskey Riot.

A week later he won the Group 3 Cup Night Sprint at Sandown, then headed to Brisbane and won the heat and final of the Group 2 Queensland Derby , before heading home and winning the heat and last week’s $100,000 to the winner final of the Group 1 Silver Chief at The Meadows.

And again it was that now customary blinding speed which he produced, stepping only moderately but roaring through the first split in a stunning 4.99s, then carving out a flying 17.40s up the back, eventually stopping the clock at 29.68s.

It will be intriguing to see what figures he can post at Wentworth Park on Saturday.

Who Told Stevie hasn’t collected the features his brother has, but has an impressive record of eight wins and two placings from 12 starts. He was fourth in the Silver Chief last weekend.

Burnett knew very early on that the pair were good. They produced stunning figures every time he put them around a track, and the times they ran when slipped both at Sandown and The Meadows as 20 month old pups, were akin to the times his 2013 Group1 Brisbane Cup winner Kiss Me Ketut was running at his peak.

Also having a trial at Wentworth Park on Saturday night is another talented Victorian Revelation, who is now in the care of NSW trainer Mark Gatt.

Heats of both the National Derby and National Futurity will be held at Wentworth Park next Friday night, January 17, with the final the following Friday, January 24, both run along with the Group1 Paws Of Thunder.
