This Punk set to change Jim's luck

By Jeff Collerson

All Star Punk's dazzling first-up win at Dapto last Thursday indicates he might just be the greyhound to change his owner-trainer Jim Coyle's bad luck in big races.

The retired builder bred All Star Punk, who won on debut in a 520m maiden in top grade time of 29.96, from his brood bitch Funky Punk.

"All Star Punk does not turn two until May so I won't be rushing him, he will race at the provincials for a little while,'' Coyle said.

"But he has always been eight to 10 lengths faster than any other dog in my kennels so I have high hopes for him.''

Punk Angel, the grand-dam of All Star Punk, reached the final of the 2007 Ladies Bracelet and was in second position, behind pacemaker Bralyn Maisie at the first turn, when she clipped the leader's heels and fell.

Bralyn Maisie went on to win the race.

Then Punk Angel's son Evil Punk was beaten in a tight finish by Zipping Brock in the 2014 group 1 National Derby while Branded, a son of Punk Angel's dam Dos Santos, was four lengths clear in a group 1 Perth Cup heat when he broke down, dropping a hind leg muscle.

But for all that Coyle remains upbeat, after all, he did secure Dos Santos, the brood bitch who founded his phenomenally successful breeding line, free of charge.

"I was given Dos Santos on the undertaking that I would give her a good home,'' Coyle recalled.

"She produced Branded, who won 19 races, and Undisputed Dos, who won 26, and of course she also became the mother of my great brood bitch Punk Angel.''

Punk Angel is the dam of Good Odds Angel, who won 27 races for Good Odds Harada's trainer Frank Hurst, along with Ready To Riot, who has also become a great producer.

Ready To Riot's progeny includes Peter Lagogiane's 2018 Million Dollar Chase victor Mystic Riot (pictured $1,056,865 in stakes), Anthony Azzopardi's Whiskey Riot ($634,530) and Blue Sky Riot ($156,735).

"I don't think there has been a more successful brood bitch line than the one Dos Santos, my giveaway greyhound, established, and it looks like continuing,'' Coyle said.

"All Star Punk has it all ahead of him while his dam Funky Punk has since whelped a litter, now five months old, to the champion sire Fernando Bale.''

CENTRAL Coast trainer Peter Mattress had 24 hours to remember when he won at Maitland last Thursday with Thunderbird Two and followed up with a sizzling 15.97 success over 280m at WP with Screaming Moe.

Mattress, who has 11 greyhounds in work, also secured a second placing at Wenty with Mary Mary, who Chased home Fire On Ice in fast time.

"I don't think they have broken 16sec at WP for quite a while but I wasn't surprised Screaming Moe went so quick,'' Mattress said.

"I trialled her recently at LADBROKES GARDENS and she clocked 15.45, inside the recently set former record of 15.50.

"But then I couldn't get a start with her at that track so took her to Wenty Park.

"I train Thunderbird Two for Caroline Hughes, who has her litter brother Castle Archer in Jason Mackay's kennels.

"Castle Archer has had eight wins and four placings from 12 races but Thunderbird Two has taken longer to come good, he has always been a bit behind his brother.

"Thunderbird Two is start to going okay now and at Maitland his wide draw was made to order for him.''

WHEN Sail Bye edged out Sail Alone by a head in Friday's Border Park Maiden final at Casino, they gave their 86-year-old trainer John "Manny'' Antonelli a quinella.

"They are handy dogs but nothing flash, although I do have a smart greyhound called Rusty Trick,'' Antonelli.

"He is a litter brother to Steve Keep's prolific short course winner Copperhead Rogue and has won four of his past nine starts, but is currently sidelined with injury.''
