Another favourite brought undone by Dual Keroma

By Jeff Collerson

Dual Keroma, who was sent out a $6 chance when he toppled long odds-on favourite Pindari Express at Wentworth Park a week earlier, was again a giant killer at headquarters on Saturday night, this time downing $1.33 hotpot Feral Franky.

Although a year older than his nearest rival in Saturday's Free-For-All, the Susan Pitstock-trained Dual Keroma, once again a $6 shot, led all the way to easily defeat Feral Franky in 29.76s, far and away the fastest 520m time of the night.

Dual Keroma had recorded a personal best 29.61 in his WP win a week earlier, but Ray Pitstock, the trainer's husband, said later: "He got wide on the first turn Tonight and that cost him a bit of time.''

Training honours on Saturday were with Nowra trainer Garry Edwards, who won with Regal Twist in 30.07 and with More Spark in 30.44.

Both led all the way, although Regal Twist looked threatened at the half-way mark by hot favourite Kipling.

Just as Kipling looked set to rail underneath Regal Twist on the back straight and snatch the lead, he crashed into the running rail and dropped back through the field.

Edwards almost snared a treble as his third starter on Saturday, Dual Focus, took the lead on the back straight in a 520m fifth grade but after dashing clear of her rivals, was run down and beaten a half length by Topper Phoenix.

Ibrox Sandman, having his start since recovering from a split webbing, took out Saturday's opening event, a 520m fifth grade, in 30.18.

"He has been flying in post-to-post trials around my local track, Gosford,'' trainer Billy Dance said later.

"But I thought Tonight's field might be a bit strong for him.

"Ibrox Sandman loves a wide draw and Tonight's win from box seven, his third success, means he has now won each of his races from seven or eight.''

Improving stayer Winlock Ramirez, just 27 months old, indicated she has a future over long distances with a runaway 13 lengths win in Saturday's 720m event.

Trained at Molong by Kaleb Weekes, Winlock Ramirez took the lead at the first turn and covered the distance in the handy time of 42.36.

Weekes' father Gus, who handled Winlock Ramirez, said: "We expected her to get close to the 42.30 mark Tonight and think she can go a bit quicker.

"Tonight's race was her first over 720m in more than a month and Kaleb has not been able to do a lot with her, because she had a false season and had to be scratched from a recent race, which interrupted her training.''

Few greyhounds return to racing, let alone win in the city, after dropping a hind leg muscle but Elusive Wave made that successful comeback to lead throughout in 30.20 on Saturday night.

Trainer Vic Sultana said later: "She is not running fast times any more but she is going okay, especially considering she could have been finished after dropping a hind leg muscle.''
