By Jeff Collerson

Popular trainer Stan Beckingham, who has died aged 74, will be farewelled tomorrow (Thursday) at 10am at Gledswood Homestead, 900 Camden Valley Way, Catherine Field.

Beckingham, who was a roof plumber, has been a successful hobby trainer for 50 years, first registering as a trainer back on April 1, 1969, at the age of 25. His most recent Wentworth Park winner Jamella Pearl scoring over 280m on July 3.

Jamella Pearl won 11 of 32 starts, testimony to Beckingham's ability as a trainer.

Fellow trainer and lure driver Andrew Rowe paid tribute to Beckingham, saying: "He was an excellent conditioner who could turn an ordinary greyhound into a good one.

"Stan was a friendly, happy go lucky fellow who always had lots of mates around him at the racetrack.

"He had a wonderful sense of humour and loved having a bet on the dogs.

"He could turn $5 into $200, get back to nearly nothing, and finish up winning $500.

"But most importantly he was a wonderful bloke, I know my two children absolutely adored him.''

Greyhound Racing offers condolences to Stan’s family and friends.
