Super sibling stayers Blue Moon Rising and Veloce Nero again showed their remarkable versatility at Wentworth Park on Saturday night, with each of the John Finn-trained pair scoring impressive 520m wins.
Blue Moon Rising, who powered home to win the main sprint at Wentworth Park yesterday week, produced a whirlwind finish to take out the top grade 520m event on Saturday night.
Veloce Nero, who returned to Finn's kennels on Wednesday after campaigning in WA for last month's National Distance Championship, set the time standard in the six heats of the Ladbrokes Monthly Medal series, stopping the clock at 30.06.
Veloce Nero began smartly from box two and after being headed by the promising Full Blossom in the early stages, took control on the back straight to win by four lengths.
Blue Moon Rising took 30.11 to notch his 10th Wentworth Park 520m win but his performance was outstanding, as he was sixth at the half-way mark and still fourth on the home bend.
After the race trainer John Finn admitted: "I thought Blue Moon Rising might have been too far behind the leaders on the back straight to win.
"He is certainly a very good chaser.''
While Blue Moon Rising, a top class stayer, has now won 10 Wentworth Park sprints, Veloce Nero, also a crack long-distance performer, has notched five 520m events at headquarters.
Only greyhound to break the 30sec barrier at Wentworth Park on Saturday was the Peter Sims-trained Canya Star, who had a bumping duel with Poacher in the early stages before running down that greyhound to win a 520m fourth grade in 29.95.
Gunning trainer Jodie Lord continued her winning streak with Athletic Lee, having her first start for two months, leading all the way in 30.15 in a 520m Ladbrokes Monthly Medal heat.
Fastest first split of the night was recorded by the Kerry Drynan-trained Friend Of Man, who upset the well backed Making A Memory and Cop A Chevy, to win the opening event in 30.17.
Friend Of Man, who turns five in December, won the race with his early speed, clocking sizzling sectionals of 5.39 and 13.80.
Snazzy Ethics, who led all the way from box two at Wentworth Park yesterday week, completed a city double with another all-the-way win on Saturday night, coming from box eight to score in 30.35.
After the race trainer David Smith said: "Snazzy Ethics was well drawn near the fence last week but I wasn't confident she would get across from box eight tonight.
"When she did cross them and lead around the first turn, I thought she would come away but she only won by a half length.
"However she did have a hard run the previous Saturday and pulled up a bit sore after that race, so she might not be have been quite at her absolute best tonight.''
Four-year-old veteran Winnie Allen scored her third consecutive Wentworth Park win for trainer Simon Rhodes when she held off the David Smith-owned, Peter Mantach-trained White Sox Ethics, to win a 520m race in 30.10 by a head.
"Winne Allen seems to like Wenty,'' handler Greg Smith said.
White Sox Ethics' trainer Peter Mantach said: "My bitch had not raced since June and while she is better known as a stayer, I expected her to run well as she trialled 22.50 over 400m at Richmond recently.''
