Crocmedia National Championships

Local greyhounds claimed both the Sprint and the Distance Finals of the Crocmedia National Championships at Cannington in Perth on Saturday night.

In the Sprint final, it was the CHRIS Halse-trained PREMIUM Share who stormed home late to grab the lead and the $75,000 prize for the winner.

It was PREMIUM Share’s 13th win from 23 starts, all coming at Cannington. After a mix-up at the first turn, NSW representative Good Odds Harada was able to lead, with PREMIUM Share moving into second.

Good Odds Harada looked to have the race in his keeping heading out of the back, but the local stormed home and claimed victory, with NEW ZEALAND representative Dyna Dave collecting third place.

In the Distance final, most expected it to be Victorian Torando Tears claiming the title, but just like in the Galaxy Final at Cannington earlier this year, he was a beaten odds-on favourite.

The final went to local Reidy’s Runner for trainer CHRIStine Bennett, comfortably winning from Tornado Tears, with NSW picking up another Nationals’ placing with Veloce Nero a great third.

Nationals’ Awards.

While the action was on the track on Saturday in Perth, the spotlight was off the track on Friday when the Annual Awards were handed out.

Victorian Orson Allen was crowned greyhound of the year, and local trainer CHRIS Halse awarded the trainer of the year.

It was a good night for NSW with Chica Destacada taking out the Dam of the Year award, NSW-owned Fernando Bale winning the Sire of the Year, and Jason Mackay’s Zipping Bailey collecting the Run of the Year for her brilliant Golden Easter Egg victory.

Record run sees Feral Franky confirmed for the Gunnedah TAB Million Dollar Chase

Feral Franky has been confirmed as the headline act on the track at the opening night of the TAB Million Dollar Chase at Gunnedah next Saturday, after shattering the track record in a trial on Saturday morning.

Trainer Jack Smith had indicated he may target Gunnedah for the greyhound known as The Feral, but he wanted to trial his kennel star before confirming whether that would be Feral Franky’s path in the rich series.

“Oh yeah he’ll definitely be going to Gunnedah for the heats,” Smith said. “He went pretty well. He gets around most tracks, we just needed a look and we’ve had that now.”

Feral Franky had no problems at all on the Gunnedah track and was reportedly “a cigarette paper off the rail,” as he carved out 29.82s.

To put the time into context the track record at Gunnedah was set by Myrniong Master in May this year at 30.19s. The 0.37s Feral Franky has slashed off that time equates to more than five lengths.

Finish On Lure race meeting

The Richmond Race Club on Sunday hosted a very successful meeting where all 11 races were conducted as Finish On Lure racing.

The meeting followed a six-week period of complimentary trials conducted at the Club after race meetings on Wednesdays and Fridays and the feedback from all participants involved had been extremely positive.

As a result there were 180 nominations of the meeting and 11 races drawn, and the feedback after the meeting was again very positive.

GRNSW and GWIC plan to conduct further race meetings and also extend the Finish on Lure trials at other racing venues in coming weeks, and following the overwhelming response to the Richmond meeting, there are further announcements on these expected in coming weeks.

Sires On Ice Black Top

On Friday night four heats of the Group 2 Sire On Ice Black Top were run at LADBROKES GARDENS, with the Jason Mackay-trained Aston Duke - a kennelmate of Zipping Bailey - setting the time standard of 29.37s, beating the talented Bit Flash by half a length.

Other heat winners were Black Forge (29.61s) who defeated Mystic Riot, Sheba’s Dream (29.64s) who downed Eye Rock, and Good Odds Buddy - a littermate of Good Odds Harada - who clocked 29.50s beating Double Back.

Black Forge has actually qualified for back to back Black Top Finals, however he didn’t start last year after being injured between his heat and the final. His place in the final went to Caitlyn Keeping who led throughout to win the Group 2 feature.

The box draw for the Black Top Final to be run next Friday is: 1 Aston Duke 2 Good Odds Buddy 3 Eye Rock 4 Mystic Riot 5 Bit Flash 6 Double Back 7 Sheba’s Dream 8 Black Forge 9 Jamella Jet 10 Nangar Kash.

Beteasy Dapto Maiden

On Thursday night four heats of the Beteasy Dapto Maiden were held with some outstanding performances produced.

The star on the clock was the Tim Caines-trained Bobby The Brute who clocked best of the night figures with a slick 29.64s performance.

But the two runs which had patrons talking were those of the Michelle Sultana pair, Zipping Browny and Zipping Phil. Each produced a stunning effort to win their heat, and both have a great chance in next Thursday Final.

The other heat went to CHRIStine Proctor’s Bethany Rose.
