Kanzan graded to make it Wenty win number five

By Jeff Collerson

Kanzan may be drawn on the "wrong side of the track'' but dropping from being a National Distance Championship runner-up to a fourth and fifth grade event should see the John Smart-trained stayer notch her fifth Wentworth Park 720m win on Saturday night.

Kanzan has box eight in the Matty Steward's Last Stand Stakes and looks a class above her rivals.

She almost earned a trip to Perth for next week's Group 1 Crocmedia National Distance Championship final when she flashed home to finish second (pictured here), beaten a half-length by Veloce Nero, in the NSW run-off at Wentworth Park on August 8.

Saturday's race represents a massive drop in class for Kanzan, who, with four wins and 10 placings from appearances, is easily the most successful Wentworth Park 720m runner in the lineup.

While Kanzan does like to rail, her record from wide draws is not too shabby, as she has won two from eight box eight assignments and four from 12 races from box six.

Miss Ibrox won at Wentworth Park on August 8 despite, not because of, her box eight draw, and the keen railer looks hard to beat after drawing box one in Saturday night's Phil & Dawn's Kitchen Stakes, 520m.

The Adam Campton-trained Miss Ibrox worked her way across from box eight to be third, on the rails, at the midway point at her latest outing, before over-powering the two leaders in the run home to win by nearly five lengths in a nippy 30.13sec.

"Miss Ibrox is a dead-set inside draw greyhound and even from box one she veers hard left towards the rails as soon as the boxes open,'' Campton said.

"But if her rivals don't cut across to the rails too sharply and get in front of her soon after the start, she should balance up okay on Saturday night.''

Miss Ibrox's dangers are Manooka, who has box eight after racing wide in winning from box one on Wednesday at Wentworth Park, and Pop's Paradise, box seven.

Pop's Paradise has also raced wide in finishing second, from boxes eight and two, in two Wentworth Park starts since joining the kennels of Glen McKinley.

Knighthood, who has won in scorching times at LADBROKES GARDENS and Richmond, makes his keenly anticipated Wentworth Park debut from box four in Saturday night's Duke's Ladbrokes Previews Stakes, 520m.

The Peter Lagogiane-trained dog clocked 29.36 winning at The Gardens on July 28 and stopped the clock at 30.48 in a Richmond 535m win a week later.

"I gave Knighthood a hit-out at Wenty on Tuesday night to give him a look at the track,'' Lagogiane said.

"He didn't set the course alight but his second split of 14.04 was encouraging and he pulled up well so should be good on Saturday night.''

Knighthood's main opponent looms as the Mark Gatt-trained Shanjo Prince, who has box six.

Shanjo Prince won his first three starts since joining Gatt's kennels before a strong finishing second to Knight's Page in a fast 29.75 on July 27.

"This dog just keeps improving and he looks well positioned out in box six because he seems to prefer an outside draw,'' kennel foreman Daniel Gatt said.

Trainer Peter Mantach would have been happy to see Benkennie Chic draw box three in Saturday night's Peninsula Car Repairs Stakes, 520m.

After Benkennie Chic rattled home to finish third, beaten just over two lengths by Fancy Mac at Wentworth Park on August 10, Mantach said: "She had box five tonight and wants the fence.

"Before this race she had been placed in two from four starts but had drawn box seven or eight in every race, and she is better from an inside box.''
