Chica does it again

By Jeff Collerson

Four winners from two different litters produced by phenomenal brood bitch Chica Destacada and a slashing victory by the oldest greyhound competing were the highlights of Saturday night's Wentworth Park card.

Trainer John Finn landed 40 per cent of the Wentworth Park programme with his group 1 winning stayer Blue Moon Rising reverting to sprinting to take out the Free-For-All in 29.96sec, fastest 520m time of the night.

Blue Moon Rising is by Fernando Bale from Chica Destacada's first litter, whelped in April, 2016, while Finn also trained a trio of winners from Chica's second litter, whelped in July, 2017, to Barcia Bale.

Really Unreal looked a stayer of the future in staging a last-to-first performance to take out Saturday's opening event, a 520m fifth grade, in 30.39.

Her litter brother Blue Summer Sky scored (pictured) his second 720m win in as many attempts when he led from the half-way mark to score a five lengths in a fifth grade in 42.98.

Then their litter sister Making A Memory opened her Wentworth Park account, leading throughout in a 520m fifth grade in 30.32, after being placed in four of her previous six Wenty outings.

Blue Moon Rising's fastest time of the night effort was outstanding as the dog collided when angling for a run at the top of the straight, but got up to win by a half length from Oxley Rebel and pacemaker Vouchers.

Spring Creek Bill turns five in September but according to trainer Donna Campbell: "The older her gets, the better he goes.''

Campbell made that comment after Spring Creek Bill, a September, 2014, whelping, made the pace, was headed by Smoking Road, but came again to score by a length in a slick 30.18.

"He was sidelined for two months with torn ligaments in a toe and only returned with a couple of 440m races at Goulburn before winning over 520m at Dapto on July 11,'' Campbell said.

"Despite his age he has had only 54 starts because there always seems to be something wrong with him,'' Campbell lamented.

Trainer Mark Garr had second placegetters on Saturday with Tennessee Tiger and Smoking Road but collected first prizemoney with Ritza Vonnie, who scored her first Wentworth Park win at her sixth appearance at headquarters.

Ritza Vonnie had box one but had failed previously from inside boxes at Wentworth Park.

On Saturday night though she pushed through at the first turn to be trailing Sir Duke going through the catching pen, taking the lead on the back straight and racing away to win by nearly six lengths in a smart 30.01sec.

"She raced keenly tonight, I was pleased the way she bumped another dog out of her way at the first turn to move into second place going through the pen,'' trainer Mark Gatt said.

"But although Ritza Vonnie won well from box one tonight, she is a dead-set box eight greyhound.

"Her and her litter brother Tennessee Tiger, who finished second for me tonight, and Shanjo Prince, who won for our kennel on Wednesday, are all suited best from outside boxes.''

Mercedes Dior gave Joan Singline a belated 91st birthday present when she stormed home to win a 720m fifth grade on Saturday in 42.68, best time of the night.

Mercedes Dior is owned and trained by Singline's daughter Lorraine Atchison, who said later: "Mum turned 91 the other day and told me off after tonight's win.

"I did not have a cent on Mercedes Dior, who was a $31 chance tonight, and mum said when she was training dogs she would never let them go around without having at least $10 on them.''
