Victorian trainer Paul Abela prepared outstanding sprinters Aston Dinnigan, Aston It Is and Cavatron but has no hesitation in nominating Aston-peregrine">Aston Peregrine, who he is bringing to Wentworth Park on Saturday night, as his best.
Cavatron, who won 14 races, was a finalist in last year's Maitland Gold Cup while Aston Dinnigan and Aston It Is won 16 and 20 races respectively, but Abela insists Aston-peregrine">Aston Peregrine is faster.
She has box two in Saturday night's third heat of the Ladbrokes Peter Mosman Opal where she is chasing her sixth win in 10 starts.
"Aston Peregrine has just returned from a bad injury, she fractured a knee-cap in early April,'' Abela said.
"But the setback has not affected her because she has had two races since coming back and won them both, over 460m at Warragul.
"Her only flaw is that she can be hit or miss at box rise, but she is very strong and her last section is her best.''
Abela also has Front Page News in box one in heat one of the Peter Mosman Opal, and gives her a strong chance.
"Front Page News is improving all the time,'' Abela said.
"She has been beginning well in her recent races and if she is second or third going through the catching pen she will be hard to hold off.
"Like Aston Peregrine, her final split is her best.''
Fellow Victorian trainer Keith Hellmuth, who trained the champion sprinter Peter Rocket, makes a rare visit to Wentworth Park with Start A Riot in heat four of the Peter Mosman Opal.
Peter Rocket, who earned $329,000 prizemoney between 2012 and 2014, made 11 group finals and won the Group 1 Dapto Megastar during a NSW campaign.
"Start A Riot has the advantage of having had a look at Wenty because she was fourth in a National Futurity heat there in late January,'' Hellmuth said.
"That run can be forgotten as she got hit hard when the boxes opened and lost all chance.
"Box six on Saturday is no help but while she rails reasonably well, Start A Riot will run straight from the boxes to the first turn and if she is sitting on the leader's tail on the back straight she will give this race a decent crack.''
Another successful Victorian trainer, Jeff Britton and his partner Angela Langton, are bringing a dozen greyhounds to Wentworth Park on Saturday for the Peter Mosman Opal and the Vic Peters Classic heats.
Their runners are Mepunga Frankie (box two, race 1), Black Signature and Weblec Jack (boxes five and seven, race 2), Flossing (box five, race 3), Western Envoy and Weblec Ace (boxes two and six, race 4), Mepunga Maggie and Fancy Francene (boxes three and six, race 5), Keeper Of Keys and Mister Harlewood (boxes two and five, race 6) and Vivatar and Spearhead (boxes six and eight, race 8).
The Langton/Britton team are regular visitors to Sydney group events and their bitch Circle Of Dreams won the group 1 National Futurity at Wentworth Park on February 2.
Best NSW prospects in Saturday's Vic Peters heats look to be Bob Payne Sprint victor Good Odds Harada, ideally positioned in box one in heat three, and Flying Amy Classic winner Feral Franky, also well placed in box two, in heat four.
Sorry Scott, who carved out her personal best Wentworth Park figures of 29.65 when she led throughout last Saturday night, should overcome box four in heat two of the Peter Mosman Opal providing she can avoid another quick beginner, Flossing (box five), in the run to the first turn.
