Brisbane Cup back on the radar for Jamella Jet

By Jeff Collerson

Jamella Jet almost certainly earned a crack at the heats of the $250,000 Brisbane Cup with his emphatic win over Golden Easter Egg victor Zipping Bailey in Saturday night's "red hot'' Free For All at Wentworth Park.

The Andrew Crouch-trained Jamella Jet trailed Rostered On in the early stages, but pounced on the lead at the half-way mark to score by three lengths from the fast finishing Zipping Bailey, who was last of five runners going through the catching pen.

The winner covered the 520m in 29.82s on a rain-affected track, fastest time of the night.

After the race Andrew Crouch said: "Jamella Jet indicated he was ready to run a big race when we trialled him over 400m at Richmond recently.

"The best he had previously clocked there was 22.50s but Jamella Jet recorded 22.30s at his most recent Richmond hit-out.''

Crouch's son Adam said: "After Jamella Jet was unplaced at Albion Park on June 6 we were not going to take him back there but after this win I think we have to reconsider.

"After all, we have done the hard yards by taking Jamella Jet to Albion Park for a trial and then a race, so he deserves a crack at the Brisbane Cup heats on June 27.''

Next month's Vic Peters Classic and Peter Mosman Opal, for young dogs and bitches, is really gaining momentum following Saturday night's Wentworth Park card.

Jimmy Casey, who notched his sixth Wentworth Park win in a dozen appearances in a slick 29.94s, second quickest of Saturday's meeting, is being set for the July 6 heats of the Vic Peters.

"That race has always been his goal and although I was recently offered $20,000 for him, I was never going to sell,'' trainer Peter Carr said.

"I am toying with the idea of taking Jimmy Casey away from Wenty for a week or so and may nominate him for a 605m race at Dubbo on Friday night.''

Jamella Jet's trainer Andrew Crouch took out Saturday night's $10,000 to the winner NSW Bred Maiden Series with Chill Easy, who followed her all-the-way heat win in 30.43 with a repeat performance in 30.19 in the final.

"It has been a long hard road with Chill Easy as her career had to be put on hold after she came in season and then got sick with some kind of chest infection,'' Adam Crouch said.

Sheba's Dream won on debut at Wentworth Park on Saturday for trainer Michelle Shambler and that win has earned her a tilt at the Peter Mosman Opal for bitches on July 6 and 13.

'"Although Sheba's Dream had not raced at Wentworth Park I had taken her down there for a couple of hand-slips so she knew her way around the course,'' Shambler said.

"Sheba's Dream is a smart greyhound, she is very strong and is the right age for the Peter Mosman.''

Kanzan set the time standard in the NSW Bred Stayers' heats, covering the 720m on Saturday in 42.47.

Clinton Payne, spokesman for Kanzan's owners, the Quaddie Boys Syndicate, said: "Kanzan has spent almost her entire career in top grade and dropping back to fifth class in this race made a big difference.

"But she had box eight tonight and can go even better if she draws inside in Next week's final.''
