Litter brothers Jimmy Casey and Charlie Casey gave western districts trainer Peter Carr a timely winning double at Wentworth Park on Saturday night with their prizemoney set to pay for repairs to a wrecked trailer.
Three months ago Carr and his two greyhounds were involved in a serious accident while returning from WP and the trailer in which the dogs were travelling was badly damaged.
"I have been quoted $3300 to have the trailer back as good as new so winning these two races tonight could not have come at a better time,'' Carr said at WP on Saturday.
Jimmy Casey overcame a first turn check to come from third on the home turn to win a 520m fifth grade in a slick 30.04, while Charlie Casey (pictured) led throughout to win a similar event in 30.16.
"I was a bit disappointed with Charlie Casey's time because I have always considered him a length quicker than his brother,'' Carr said.
"But I think their wins were well earned because on country tracks they have been tackling greyhounds of the calibre of Nangar Diva and company and sometimes running them down.''
Fastest time on Saturday night was posted by the Mark Ballantine-trained Wentworth Park rookie Amity Runner, who wasn't headed in a 520m fifth grade in 30.01sec.
Amity Runner is a litter sister to Furious Not Fast, who won at WP for Ballantine on May 25.
"Amity Runner is a bit more tractable than Furious Not Fast and when she won tonight she repeated a trial I gave her at Wenty on Tuesday night,'' Ballantine said.
"On Tuesday she clocked 5.52 and 13.97, the splits she recorded tonight, and then I gave her a drag around behind the lure.
"Amity Runner scored her first win at start number 11 but she was getting beaten in 400m races and is better suited over 520m, and she has now won three of her past four over that longer trip.''
Kraken Spike continued his consistent form for Orchard Hills trainer Keith Pedrana with a powerhouse performance to win a 520m fifth grade in30.37.
Kraken Spike was second early but after being relegated to fifth position on the back straight, came from third on the home turn to win running away by a length.
"He is owned in Victoria and since coming to me has had 14 runs and been unplaced just three times,'' Pedrana said.
"It was a good effort tonight because Kraken Spike and Bad Ronnie, the big dog drawn outside him, had a bumping duel in the early stages.''
Champion stayer Poco Dorado's younger half-sister Dreamin' Is Free scored her second long distance win in as many starts with an all-the-way success in Saturday's 720m Ladbrokes Monthly Medal final.
Dreamin' Is Free had led throughout to win her heat in 42.72 but trimmed those figures to a nippy 42.48 on Saturday.
The Shane Pulbrook-trained One For Tod gave favourite backers plenty to cheer about when she led from the first turn to win Saturday's feature 280m event in 16.33.
One For Tod's personal best at WP had been 16.04 but the slower time was good enough to have One For Tod four lengths clear of her rivals on Saturday and took her record to 24 wins from 61 starts, including an outstanding five wins and two seconds from seven WP 280m appearances.
