Dickinson's amazing run continues with a treble

By Jeff Collerson

Trainers winning trebles at Wentworth Park is uncommon but for an owner to achieve such a feat, as Stuart Dickinson did last Saturday night, is extremely rare.

Dickinson races each of trainer Jodie Lord's winners last Saturday, Cawbourne Madox, Cawbourne Marty and Cawbourne Get Up, and bred all of those greyhounds.

That treble continued the remarkable start Dickinson has made to 2019.

Dickinson, who will breed eight litters this year on the 580 acre family property at Cawdor, near Camden, has also won three Group 1 finals in NEW ZEALAND in 2019.

"I am especially proud of the fact that Cawbourne Marty and Cawbourne Get Up are fourth generation members of my breeding line,'' Dickinson said.

"I bought their great grand-mother, which I named Cawbourne Pearl, at the Dapto Puppy Auction nearly 20 years ago.

"Cawbourne Pearl was a litter sister to the champion stayer Kumta Chase, who was judged the NSW Greyhound of the Year in 2003.

"Cawbourne Marty and Cawbourne Get Up are from the first litter whelped by Cawbourne Ottey, a grand-daughter of Cawbourne-pearl">Cawbourne Pearl, who was among the first greyhounds I owned.

"The property at Cawdor has been with my family for 46 years and these days I have 60 greyhounds there, comprising puppies, brood bitches and young race dogs.

"I also have 25 greyhounds racing in NEW ZEALAND.''

Dickinson-owned dogs have been starrring the Shaky Isles, with the Matt Roberts-trained Cawbourne Taylor taking out the group 1 Wanganui Stayers Cup last Friday, just 24 hours before the Sydney owner's Wentworth Park treble.

Cawbourne Taber's win over Cawbourne Krusty gave Roberts and Dickinson the quinella in another NEW ZEALAND Group 1, the Christchurch Oaks, while Cawbourne Krusty landed this year's Group 1 NEW ZEALAND Futurity at Wanganui.

Dickinson ranks Cawbourne Mim, who won 21 races in 2003 and 2004, as the fastest greyhound he has owned, but rates Cawbourne Frank, a winner of 28 races from 2004 to 2007, as his favourite.

Tornado Tears' NSW owner Michael Ivers believes his champion stayer could be even better this preparation following the dog's track record smashing performance in Saturday night's Group 1 West Australian Galaxy at Cannington.

Tornado Tears zoomed over the 715m trip in 41.25sec, eclipsing the previous record by the equivalent of around six lengths.

"He lost five months of his career through cracking a hock last September but he only turned three last month,'' Ivers said.

"Tornado Tears seems to have come back tougher and stronger, he is a more mature stayer now, and will surely be hard to beat in whatever race he contests.''

The Robert Britton-trained Tornado Tears is expected to enhance his record to a remarkable 23 wins from 33 starts in Saturday night's $100,000 to the winner WA Galaxy final.

FORMER Bargo trainer Marien Sullivan has retired her brilliant short courser Tijuana Icon, with 34 wins and 26 placings from 78 starts.

Tijuana Icon, who turns five in June, was a great favourite with Nowra racegoers and won 25 races in NSW before Sullivan and her husband Robert re-located to Victoria.

Tijuana Icon raced in NSW from December, 2015 to September, 2017, and during her Victorian campaign, from January, 2018 to March 6 this year, has won nine races.
