VALE - ERIC ROBINSON

Eric Robinson, a successful trainer in the sport for more than five decades, has passed away.

Robinson, who has been based at Lake Illawarra, and was still training a small team, passed away aged 88 on Monday morning.

“Pop loved his greyhounds,” his grandson Tim said on Thursday. “He was 88 and had a good innings, and a full life, but his time was up.

“Pop grew up learning from his father in Lithgow who was a trainer and an SP bookie.

“Pop trained with some of the best trainers all around the country. He used to say: “I don’t know much but I know a little bit about dogs”, and he really did.

“There will be a private funeral held tomorrow, with just the family.”

Some of the better greyhounds Eric Robinson put the collar and lead on were Bunyarra Miss (pictured) who won the 1975 Distance Championship at Bulli and the Journalists’ Cup, and Dunmore Comet who at the peak of his career won the Bulli Greyhound of the year.

Only last Thursday, his greyhound La Bamba Icon won at Dapto.

“I went and saw him last Friday and showed him the video on my phone, but he said he’d already watched it the night before. A few of the guys had gone in to see him while he was in hospital.”

GRNSW wishes to pass on condolences to Eric’s family and friends.
