Greyhound Racing New South Wales (GRNSW) on Tuesday announced a six year disqualification for participant John Horan following an Inquiry commenced in May 2018.
The participant faced one charge of failing to provide veterinary attention when necessary to a greyhound in the participant’s care or custody, and one charge of failing to exercise such reasonable care and supervision as was necessary to prevent a greyhound in the participant’s care or custody from being subjected to unnecessary pain or suffering.
The Inquiry Panel was satisfied that both charges were proved, and handed down penalties of a period of disqualification of six years in respect of each charge, with the penalties to be served concurrently. In handing down its penalties, the Inquiry Panel considered that the offences were of a very serious nature, having regard to the appropriate standard of care which is expected to be provided to greyhounds by greyhound racing participants.
GRNSW takes the welfare of greyhounds very seriously, and is deeply committed to ensuring that the highest standards of greyhound welfare and safety are upheld. The Inquiry Panel’s decision on penalties reflects the seriousness of the offences and GRNSW’s commitment to the welfare of greyhounds.

From 1 July 2018, the Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission is responsible for investigations and inquiries under the Greyhound Racing Rules. However, GRNSW will continue to conclude any inquiries commenced by it prior to 1 July 2018.
