Dapto Adoption Day a Great Success

While their greyhound action is normally restricted to Thursday evenings under lights, at Dapto on Saturday it was bathed in spectacular winter sunshine for the region’s first Adoption Day.

Good crowds were on hand throughout the morning and afternoon, with organisers delighted with the day’s results.

A total of 20 of the 36 greyhounds available, were adopted, with the first two amazingly finding new homes even before the 10am official start of proceedings, so keen were patrons to secure their new family pet.

Of the 20 dogs adopted, 15 of those found new homes in the Illawarra region, with the remainder being adopted out to visitors from Western Sydney and the city’s Inner West.

“It was great to bring an Adoption Day to regional NSW and particularly to a strong greyhound community such as the Illawarra, and give the people of the region the opportunity to adopt a greyhound,” said GRNSW chief executive Tony Mestrov who was in attendance on the day.

“The results for the day were tremendous, and it shows once again that greyhounds truly are looked upon as a fantastic family pet.”

The Greyhounds as Pets program is also involved in the education of the general public on the benefits of having a greyhound as a pet, and at Dapto on Saturday there were a number of people keen to learn more about the breed, which will no doubt translate into adoptions in the future.

In fact, one patron on Saturday met with one of the program’s most senior girls at the event, nine-year-old Daysi, and that gentleman is this week heading to GAP’s kennels on the Central Coast to adopt her.

Thanks must go to the Dapto Club for supporting the event, with a market and food stalls, and to the local media for tremendous promotion in the lead-up to the event.

GRNSW is providing ongoing support to the Greyhounds as Pets program and the Adoption Days, as it continues to show its commitment to animal welfare.
