Exciting Stayers To Battle It Out At Headquarters

By Jeff Collerson

Exciting middle distance greyhound Kanzan makes her staying debut at Wentworth Park tonight with connections confident she will run out a strong 720m in the Duke's Ladbrokes Previews Stakes.

Kanzan won over 618m at Richmond on May 23 in 35.31, just .31sec outside champion Space Star's course record.

Asked if he thought she would see out the far more gruelling Wentworth Park 720m trip trainer John Smart said: "Kanzan will run it on her ear.

"She needs to get on the bunny but when she can get to the front early there are not many greyhounds capable of running her down.

"In solo and two dog trials Kanzan breaks records all the time, she is undoubTedly the fastest I have trained.''

Smart won a dozen races with the classy stayer Lovelace, including a blistering 42.18 performance over 720m at Wentworth Park in April, 2016.
But he believes Kanzan is "many lengths'' faster.

Kanzan was a strong finishing second behind the outstanding prospect Kihael Road over 535m at Richmond on Friday after colliding on the home turn.

"Kanzan needed a solid hit-out before her first 720m outing at Wenty so instead of trialling her I decided to give her a 535m race at Richmond,'' Smart said.

Wednesday’s card features two interesting 720m events, with race four, another fifth grade event, the stronger of the pair.

Here Zipping Floyd, who has won over 720m at Wentworth Park in a tidy 42.68, has box one, King Panda, an impressive Bathurst 700m winner has three and Sherbini, who has clocked 42.66 at Wentworth Park, has drawn seven.

But trainer Daniel Flanagan is upbeat about the chances of his rookie stayer Surfing Dyno, who has drawn box six, upsetting the more fancied trio.

Surfing Dyno came from a long way back when a close third to Izzy Power over 600m at LADBROKES GARDENS on June 5 and has won over 618m at Richmond in a handy 35.85.

Surfing Dyno is also an accomplished Wentworth Park performer where he has won over 520m in a scorching 29.73, but is untried over 720m.

"If Surfing Dyno is going to stay he is ready now because he can't get any fitter and I have just had a blood count done on him which came back 100 per cent,'' Flanagan said.

"Surfing Dyno has been running his middle distance races upside down, getting back in the field and having no luck in the early stages.

"Having a vacant box next to him is a bonus and he should be up closer to the early lead in this longer race than he has been in recent 600m events.''

Fast beginner Miss Vee, who is ideally drawn in box eight, shapes up as Wednesday’s best bet in race five, the 520m Ladbrokes Cash Out Stakes.

The Ron Bell-trained greyhound is the quickest Wentworth Park greyhound in the field, having posTed 29.97 on April 7 and producing that sort of form with a close second to Zipping Clive over 450m at Maitland on June 7.

Wednesday’s best value wager could be Ritzy Chicki, well boxed in eight in the Ted's Lounge At Wentworth Park Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

None of her rivals has matched Ritzy Chicki's fastest Wentworth Park time of 30.04sec and it should be noTed that when she recorded her personal best figures she had exiTed box eight.

Her trainer Christine Proctor can land a winning double tonight as Ritzy Chicki's litter sister Chit Chat Chicki looks well placed in the Ladbrokes Daily Video Stakes, another fifth grade over 520m.

Nabiac Soldier, unlucky in each of three Wentworth Park placings, gets his chance to break through in the 520m fifth grade Xmas In July At Wentworth Park Stakes.

"His problem is he dwells at the start and while I would have preferred him drawn on the rails, rather than out in box seven, he pulled up well after his luckless second at Wentworth Park last Wednesday,'' trainer Allan Woods said.
