Kihael On The Road To Success At Headquarters

By Jeff Collerson

Kihael Road was a certainty beaten when second at his latest Wentworth Park start and has the perfect draw to bounce back and win race seven there tonight.

Kihael Road, who has box one in a 520m fifth grade, is the only dog in the field to have broken the 30 second barrier at headquarters.

He clocked 29.93 after exiting box one last September but was awkwardly positioned in box six when second to Famous Prince at Wentworth Park on February 28.

In the latter race Kihael Road was badly checked as he attempted to cross to the rails at the first turn and put up a mighty effort to beat all but the winner, who recorded a smart 29.99.

Kihael Road was spelled after the February race but his western districts trainer Kim Hyde rarely races her greyhounds in the city and when she does bring them to headquarters they invariably perform creditably.

Buck's Future is all the rage for Wednesday’s Ladbrokes Maiden Final but the box draw brings Zipping Memphis in with a great chance of upsetting the favourite.

Buck's Future, who has drawn well in box two, took the lead at the half-way mark to win his heat last Wednesday in 30.36.

He won by over nine lengths while the other heat winner, Bogan Villa, took 30.85 to cover the 520m.

But Zipping Memphis, who had box six when third to Bogan Villa, was never out of trouble in the early stages and is tipped to be the big improver from the rails trap in Wednesday’s final.

After the heats Zipping Memphis' trainer Jason Magri said: "My dog was terribly unlucky tonight, the box beat him.

"He had clocked 30.10 in a trial at Wenty and is badly in need of box one in the final.''

If Zipping Memphis can reproduce his Wentworth Park trial figures his inside running could enable him to topple the promising Buck's Future.

Wednesday’s best value bet is shaping up to be Dyna Aviator, who has box five in race 10 for in-form trainer Simon Rhodes.

The Bargo-based Rhodes is enjoying a unprecedented run of success with greyhounds formerly trained in Victoria and Dyna Aviator, who won seven from 38 races south of the border, has won one of three assignments since coming to NSW.

The dog won first-up for Rhodes at Dapto on April 26 and had no luck when fourth to Time Lee Money at his Wentworth Park debut on Saturday night.

Dyna Aviator was in a prominent position, contesting the lead at the first turn, when he collided heavily with the winner.

Under the circumstances he did well to beat all but the placegetters and meets far weaker opposition tonight.

"I gave Dyna Aviator a post-to-post hand-slip at Wentworth Park before last Saturday's race and he went 24.33 which is extra smart,'' Rhodes said.

"And in an earlier, initial hit-out from the 520m starting boxes, Dyna Aviator clocked 30.30 on a track which was not all that quick.

"So providing he gets a clear run from box five I think he can win this time.''

Goldstein, who got within .46sec of Ebby Ripper's track record when he won over 715m at LADBROKES GARDENS last Friday, stands out in Wednesday’s third event, a 720m fifth grade.

Goldstein, who has box seven, can handle a wide draw and was far from disgraced when third to his kennel mate Miss Wing Wong in a harder race at his Wentworth Park 720m debut on May 9.
