Little Digger Again Conquers Headquarters

By Jeff Collerson

Little Digger made full use of his advantageous box one draw to score his second top grade Wentworth Park win in a week on Saturday night.

The Ray Smith-trained dog, who had won the Dubbo Cup on April 27 and run down Blazin' Carter and El Magnifico at Wentworth Park on May 12, comfortably held off Ritza Lenny to win by two lengths in 29.96.

Little Digger's time was clearly the best of the night and his run home figures were an outstanding 11.68.

Little Digger secured a dream rails run going through the catching pen when pacemaker Poppa Ogg ran off and collided with Blazin' Carter, allowing Smith's greyhound to sail through to a clear lead on the back straight.

Black Forge ran another great trial for next month's Group 1 Ladbrokes Peter Mosman Classic with a 30.12 win in a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

The Darren Sultana-trained Black Forge has now won nine of 15 starts and while he clocked 29.87 winning at Wentworth Park on May 5 his time on Saturday was meritorious as the track did not appear to be as quick as it had been for the dog's previous Wenty win.

Heats of the time honored Peter Mosman, which was first run in 1952, will be held on June 2 at Wentworth Park and Black Forge is close to being the ideal age for the puppy classic.

Trainer Bill Turnbull took great satisfaction from Busted Custard's win in Saturday's opening event as the dog, usually a front runner, was checked at the first turn and had to come from fourth on the back straight.

"When I got Busted Custard home as an unraced youngster from two different breaking-in establishments I was told the dog was unlikely to ever win a race,'' Turnbull said.

"Now he has won three at headquarters but tonight was special because after he finished unplaced in a tougher race at Wenty last Saturday the dog was very jaded and flat.

"I could not risk giving him a run because of his condition so he went into tonight's race straight off the lead, without having any sort of hit-out.''

Donna Campbell has trained some fast dogs but declared Time Lee Money the most talented she has prepared after the dog's courageous win in a 520m fifth grade on Saturday.

Time Lee Money collided heavily at the first turn with Dyna Aviator but regained his balance and took off after his kennelmate, La Chica Pequena, who was the pacemaker.

Time Lee Money careered away after taking the lead leaving the back straight to score by six lengths in a personal best Wentworth Park time of 30.26.

"In trials he is the fastest greyhound I have trained but until recently he wasn't reproducing his trial form in races,'' Campbell said.

"A few recent runs in moderate class fields seem to have boosted his confidence and now he is looking like a real race dog.''

Charlm Knight, who had bungled the start at his previous four Wentworth Park outings, finally nailed the jump to lead throughout in 30.24 in a 520m fifth grade on Saturday.

After the event trainer Richard Muscat said: "I had done some box work with him this week because I figured there was not a lot of early speed in this race and that if Charlm Knight could jump smartly he could lead all the way.''

See you next week!
