Bootsma Beckons To Buck The Trend

By Courtney Rees

Yerong Creek trainer Chris Bootsma is hoping Halle Rockin’ can break through for a much-deserved win as the Wagga Gold Cup carnival kicks off on Friday.

Heats of the Garry Anesbury Maiden Heats (320m) start a busy three weeks on the track.

Halle Rockin’ has drawn box one in the second of the three heats.

Bootsma is hoping the good draw can help the bitch her first win at start 27.

“There is a million dollar question, but I would like to think so,” Bootsma said.

“She has had essentially bad luck and has come up against some outstanding dogs on many occasions, but she is a very honest dog and will give a good show.”

Despite taking her time to greet the judge first, Halle Rockin has been placed in 12 of her starts including two of her last three.

She is coming off a second at Temora, and while unplaced from two attempts at box one, Bootsma believes the draw should suit.

“She has never had any luck in drawing boxes, so she hasn’t had a lot of box one, so I’m hopeful,” he said.

He rates first starters Hazel Mccardel and How’s It Nicky as the main dangers after both drew well.

All are looking to qualify for the $2000 to the winner final on Wagga Gold Cup night, May 25.

Bootsma has three greyhounds in the 11-race card and rates littermate Tilly Rockin’ as the best of his chances.

Tilly Rockin’ has drawn box six in the Interior Constructions Stakes (525m) and is coming off a second at Temora last month.
