Terrific Tamworth Carnival 'The Best Ever'

By Daily Liberal

Tamworth Greyhound Racing Club president Robert Munn has called the 2018 Tamworth Cup Carnival one of the best the club’s ever held.

“I think it was one of our best – if not the best – we’ve had in some time,” Munn said.

“The turnout of dogs over the whole carnival and the turnout of patrons on Saturday [for the Tamworth Cup final] was probably the biggest we’ve had.”

The Carnival began on Saturday, April 21 and included an ANZAC Day meet, a 10 race card on April 28 before a host of finals wrapped the carnival up on May 5.

The club had some new sponsors come on board in 2018 which saw more money on offer for the cup carnival. Munn said the extra sponsorship helped with the carnival’s success.

“The extra money we had on offer probably attracted a few more people – that always helps,” he said.

In a thrilling finish the The Mikeloren Patisserie Tamworth Cup Final was won by Charles Northfield’s greyhound Spare Cash who beat Robert Green's Queen Reen by a head to claim the $3,000 top prize.

Spare Cash followed in the footsteps of 2017 winner Valaskan Gold trained by Joe McFadyen

The maiden series was taken out by Dupiter. Trained by the Gunnedah based Jamie Bush, Dupiter improved on his second placed heat finish to claim the  Peel Valley Traffic Control/ Curly Craig Memorial Maiden final and the $2,700 prize money attached to it.

It was another thrilling finish in the 1-5 wins John Jordan Memorial/SandByMe series, with third favourite Black Touch claiming the win for trainer John Cini by a neck from box 2.

Tamworth’s next meeting is scheduled for June 16.
