Mister Fernando Searching For His Best

By Jeff Collerson

Mister Fernando lost all chance when he bungled the start from his wide draw at Wentworth Park on Saturday night but is poised to make amends from box one at headquarters Wednesday.

The Christine Proctor-trained greyhound is unbeaten in two races from the rails draw and looks hard to beat in the Beauty Bank Fundraiser Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Mister Fernando jumped smartly from box six and led throughout to win in a fast 29.98, fastest time of the night at Wentworth Park on April 4.

But when he missed the start badly from box seven on Saturday he was never a winning chance, despite showing good mid-race speed to be fourth at the half-way mark.

"He wants an inside draw and box one could drag him out better this week,'' trainer Proctor said.

Boom provincial sprinter Burning Fuel, who has won five of six starts at Bulli and Maitland, makes her keenly anticipated Wentworth Park debut in race 10, a 520m fifth grade.

Although Burning Fuel has not been tested beyond 472m her trainer Mark Wilcox is confident she will have no trouble handling the additional distance.

"For her first Wentworth Park start I would have preferred to see Burning Fuel drawn near the rails but box seven won't necessarily bring her unstuck,'' Wilcox said.

"Burning Fuel is likely to run in a straight line from the starting boxes to the first turn so she should be okay.''

Burning Fuel's only hang-up could be the presence of the speedy Jacobite Jye in box eight.

Jacobite Jye has a good turn of early speed and is a keen railer.

If Jacobite Jye does crowd Burning Fuel in the run to the first corner, Rockstar Jane, who has box four, could be hard to hold out.

Rockstar Jane lacks early speed but is a particularly strong finisher and has been placed in four of her six Wentworth Park races.

Alpine Little, who has box four in race four tonight, was sent out as a $26 chance in a heat of the Group 3 New Sensation at Wentworth Park on March 21 but ran the race of her life to lead until the top of the straight.

The Tracey Kovacic-trained greyhound hung on to finish second to Blue Moon Rising, before missing a place in the final and again in a heat of the Group 2 Maitland Gold Cup on April 5.

She relished a sharp drop in class to lead throughout in a blistering 29.44 over 515m at LADBROKES GARDENS on April 13 and looks well placed in Wednesday's fifth grade event.

Wednesday's 520m Free-For-All is the fourth leg of the TAB Quadrella and from box one Royal Turbo, the "king'' of Wentworth Park, will be all the rage.

The Glen McKinley-trained greyhound has won 16 races at Wenty and boasts the excellent box one record of seven wins from a dozen appearances.

Royal Turbo's inside draw should prove a major advantage as Liberty Lee and She's Grand, drawn in boxes two and three, possess good early pace so should "run cover'' for the favourite.

Saint Gallon, who has been placed in each of six Wentworth Park races, should break through for a richly deserved city win when he exits box seven in race two, a 520m fifth grade.

The Charlie Gatt-trained speedster has been given a thorough preparation for Wednesday's race, winning two of three short course provincial sprints since resuming from a spell late last month.

Saint Gallon has a good record from outside draws and has the early zip to be the pacemaker at the crucial first turn.
