Good Odds Of A Handy Litter

By Jeff Collerson

Good Odds Regina came back after whelping a litter of puppies to win a top grade race at Wentworth Park and now her offspring are starring on the TAB circuit.

The Frank Hurst-trained Good Odds Regina produced a litter to Magic Sprite in June, 2016, and just five months later won a 520m Free-For-All at Wentworth Park.

Last Wednesday at Richmond Good Pal, a member of that litter, set the time standard in heats of a 330m maiden, winning in 18.66.

Her sister Good Brandi finished second in another heat so the duo, both trained by Hurst, will meet in the final.

On March 26 another of their siblings, Good Friend, had won over 307m at Bathurst while her sister Go Brandi has won two from three starts, including a 400m heat and final at Richmond.

Magic Brandi, yet another of Good Odds Regina's progeny, has been placed once in three outings.

Simon Rhodes continued his successful run as Sydney trainer for the all-conquering Paul and Brendan Wheeler breeding farm with Bonna Bale winning at Wentworth Park last Wednesday and new acquisition Henley Bale scoring a tough win at Dapto 24 hours later.

Bonna Bale, whose best time in six previous Wentworth Park 520m races had been 30.76, led throughout to win in 30.12.

Henley Bale took a moderate 30.48 to win over the same distance at Dapto but did it the hard way, overcoming interference and flashing home between rivals to win running away.

"Bonna Bale has not long been back in work after a seasonal spell and is a different greyhound these days,'' Rhodes said.

"Her demeanour at home is in sharp contrast to how she was before, now she is constantly jumping around, barking and wagging her tail, she just seems so much happier.

"Henley Bale has had only three starts for me and went poorly at her first run but since settling into my kennels she too has changed.

"Although her time at Dapto was not flash she kept running into the back of the front runners and chased really hard to come away and win.''

Henley Bale had won just four from 38 races in Victoria before being sent to Rhodes, who became friends with Paul Wheeler's son Brendan through playing soccer.

Velocity Liberty began smartly to win a heat of the Group 3 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden at Wentworth Park last month and again "came out running'' to break the 30sec barrier over 520m at Dapto on Thursday.

Trained by Robyn Goodwin for Queensland owner-breeder Steve Williams, Velocity Liberty jumped in front and ran her rivals off their legs to win a fifth grade Dapto heat in 29.99.

Goodwin's husband Glen, proprietor of a limousine service, said: "Queensland trainer Steve Scott, who stays with us on the south coast when he races at Wenty, recommended Robyn to Steve Williams.

"Velocity Liberty has the makings of a top notcher because as one of our early advisors on greyhound racing used to say, 'box speed is gold.'

"If Velocity Liberty wins her final at Dapto this Thursday she will return to Wentworth Park but if she happens to be beaten Robyn intends taking her to Dubbo for the heats of the Miller Memorial on April 20.

"That race is for greyhounds with zero to two wins and the 516m at Dubbo should suit be ideal for a fast starter like Velocity Liberty.

"Robyn is also training Shocked, a litter brother to Velocity Liberty, for Steve Williams, and while that greyhound's best effort in two races was a second placing at Bulli, he can actually trial faster than his sister.

"But unlike Velocity Liberty, Shocked has very poor box manners.''
