Watch The Wasp Ready To Sting At Headquarters

By Jeff Collerson

A massive drop in class and a favourable box draw should put Watch The Wasp back into the Wentworth Park winner's circle after tonight's 520m Ladbrokes Money Wire Stakes.

With five victories at headquarters Watch The Wasp is the most prolific Wentworth Park winner in tonight's fourth grade race, a far cry from the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg heat he contested at his most recent start on March 17.

In that race Watch The Wasp, who drew box three, came from last at the first turn to beat all but the placegetters, Dual Keroma, Little Digger and Tilikum.

"I was pleased with that run because in another couple of strides Watch The Wasp would have finished third and qualified for last Saturday's Golden Easter Egg semi-finals,'' trainer Dean Swain said.

"It was a pleasant surprise to find Watch The Wasp back in a fourth grade and I expect him to go close to winning.

"He drew three in his Easter Egg heat but he prefers being drawn wide and he loves the 520 metre trip at Wenty.

"Watch The Wasp has only been out of a place three times in 18 starts over tonight's course.''

Les Whitton, an 80-year-old western districts trainer, rates his race one rivals Cruze's Magic and Miss Marple the best chances of his four runners at Wentworth Park on Wednesday.

Whitton has Silken Gown in box one in race five and Tina's Magic in box two opposing Watch The Wasp, while Cruze's Magic and Miss Marple will contest the Bathurst To WP Final, 520m.

"Cruze's Magic has box four but wants box one so I lean to Miss Marple, who is well drawn out wide in box six,'' Whitton said.

"I would have loved to have seen her in box eight but the six is okay.

"Miss Marple trialled well at Wenty before finishing unplaced after finding trouble in her first two starts there.

"She can get out of a box and show early zip so I think she is capable of leading all the way.''

Really Fast Love bungled the start when a good first-up third at Wentworth Park last Wednesday night and can atone from box two in tonight's third event, the 520m fifth grade Ladbrokes Multimaker Stakes.

The Ruth Matic-trained dog went up in the air as the boxes opened last week and lost all chance, but he ran home stoutly to beat all but Winsome Currency and Charlm Major.

"Really Fast Love hand-slipped post-to-post in a fast 24.30 in his first hit-out at Wentworth Park and then trialled well over the 520m trip there,'' Matic said.

"He is normally a reliable beginner.''

Kennelmates and litter brothers Charlm Major (box eight, race five) and Charlm Knight (box two, race 10) can give trainer Richard Muscat a winning double at Wentworth Park on Wednesday.

Charlm Major came from third early when second to Winsome Currency in a similar race last week and as he tends to run in the middle of the track he looks ideally drawn.

Charlm Knight though is a good railer and he missed the jump from his unsuitable box six draw when a solid third to Blue Moon Rising and Alpine Little in a harder race at Wentworth Park last Wednesday night.

Each of Muscat's dogs boast good strike rates, with Charlm Major having won three from nine starts and Charlm Knight recording five wins from 11 races.
