Richmond Derby & Oaks Hopefuls On Show

By Jeff Collerson

Surfing Dyno and Poco Dorado produced slashing trials for next Friday night's heats of the Group 2 Richmond Derby and Oaks respectively with sub-30sec wins at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Surfing Dyno led throughout to win a 520m fifth grade in a personal best 29.73 while Poco Dorado ran down Zinkey to win a similar race in 29.68.

But Zipping Clive, whose 29.65 win was the fastest time of the night on Saturday, is unlikely to tackle the Richmond Derby.

"He has only had 14 starts so I am inclined to bring Zipping Clive back to Wentworth Park to race against dogs with a similar amount of experience,'' trainer Jason Mackay said.

But Daniel Flanagan, Surfing Dyno's trainer, is excited at the prospect of his greyhound tackling the 535m Richmond Derby.

"He has not raced there but has gone brilliantly in two post-to-post slips at the track,'' Flanagan said.

"I think the wide, roomy stretches of Richmond will suit Surfing Dyno down to the ground.

"I have been anxious to see what sort of time he could run at Wenty if he was able to go straight to the front and he proved how quick he was tonight.''

Poco Dorado has a great record at Richmond and the Oaks, for female greyhounds, looks an ideal race for her.

"She likes Richmond and was well suited boxed out wide in seven when she won at Wentworth Park tonight,'' trainer John Finn said on Saturday.

Finn is also likely to enter Poco Dorado's equally talented litter brother Two Times Twice for the male equivalent of the Oaks, the 535m Derby heats.

Two Times Twice ran down Tamaar Tux to win in a slick 29.93 at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Gunnadoo Cove staged an impressive last-to-first performance to win Saturday's only 720m race but trainer Ben Howe is unsure about whether he will set her for the Group 1 Association Cup.

Heats of the Cup will be run over 720m at Wentworth Park in March 24 with the $75,000 to the winner final a week later.

"Her run tonight was fantastic but I'm not sure Gunnadoo Cove is up to the class of the greyhounds she is likely to be meeting in a race like the Association Cup,'' Howe said.

Dynamic Mae, one of the smallest male greyhounds in training, again showed brilliant speed to lead throughout and notch his third Wentworth Park win on Saturday night.

"Early speed wins race and this dog has plenty of that,'' trainer Chris Arletos said.

"He has great box manners and plenty of heart and that's what counts.''

Sydney's fastest beginner Rusty Memories continued his fine form for Hunter Valley trainer Mark Davidson with another all-the-way win on Saturday night.

Rusty Memories again came out "under the lids'' and easily held off Fast Car Driving, who had the drop on the winner from box rise, to score in a smart 29.99.

See you next week!
