Surfing Dyno Riding His Way To The Derby

By Jeff Collerson

A massive drop in class from Free-For-All company to fifth grade should return Surfing Dyno to the winner's circle at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

The Daniel Flanagan-trained greyhound will be on trial for a start in next Friday's heats of the Group 2 Richmond Derby when he exits box two in Saturday's second event over 520m.

"I thought Surfing Dyno was a bit unlucky when he finished third to Zipping Clive and Royal Turbo in a much tougher race at Wenty on February 14,'' Flanagan said.

"He had a post-to-post hit-out at Richmond last Monday morning and Surfing Dyno ran home in 14.84, which is exceptional.

"I expect him to win on Saturday because he has a very good draw in box two.

"All being well he will contest the Richmond Derby heats because he seems to like that spacious track.

"In a couple of looks there Surfing Dyno has gone really well.''

Tamaar Tux had box eight when beaten into third place in last Friday night's 400m Richmond Cannonball final but trainer Bruce King still believes his greyhound is suited drawn on the outside in Saturday's eighth race at Wentworth Park.

Tamaar Tux has box eight in a 520m fifth grade and King said: "I like seeing him in the outside alley over this Wentworth Park journey.

"It is totally different to having box eight in a 400m race at Richmond.

"There the dogs jump on a bend but at Wentworth Park they have a straight run to the first turn.

"I was happy with Tamaar Tux's effort in the Richmond Cannonball because he was near last early and then got cluttered up at the half-way mark.

"And while he is coming off a 400m race into a 520m event, Tamaar Tux has had enough work to be fit enough to run the extra distance.

"About three weeks ago I gave him a 535m trial at Richmond and he clocked 30.80 which was good.''

Rusty Memories, arguably the fastest beginner in training, looks set to notch his sixth Wentworth Park win in race seven, a fourth and fifth grade over 520m.

Rusty Memories came out "under the lids'' to win a 400m race at Gosford on February 13 and began in similar fashion when he led throughout over 520m at Wentworth Park in his personal best time of 29.92 four nights later.

Previously Rusty Memories, despite having won four 520m races at Wentworth Park, had been "suspect'' at the end of that distance.

But on February 17, seeming to relish the dry, fast track surface, he went to the line strongly to win a fourth and fifth class event by more than two lengths from favourite Rita's Boy.

The hotpot, a noted strong finisher, had chased Rusty Memories from box rise, so the winner's performance was his strongest yet.

Cosmic Zesta has been runner-up at his past two Wentworth Park outings but he looks set to open his account at headquarters in Saturday's final event, a 520m fifth grade.

Cosmic Zesta likes to run in the centre of the track so box five could prove an asset providing he gets away cleanly.

The Geoff Grimwood-trained greyhound has clocked 30.20 for the Wentworth Park 520m journey and a repeat of those figures should be good enough to see him win this week.
