Wighton Wanting A Win At Wenty

By Jeff Collerson

No greyhound is more deserving of a Wentworth Park win than Wighton and he gets his golden opportunity in tomorrow’s opening event.

Wighton has box eight in the 520m fifth grade, the same draw he had when he won in smart time at Bulli last Saturday night.

Wighton has been placed in two of four Wentworth Park starts and was unlucky on each occasion, but his most unfortunate race was when he was sent out a $1.90 favourite on December 27.

He looked all over a winner when he charged at great speed up to the pacemaker on the back straight, but clipped the leader's heels and took a tumble.

Trainer Shane Pulbrook disclosed that Wighton has since recorded a blistering 24.10 in a post-to-post hand-slip at Wentworth Park.

Those figures are usually only accomplished by Group 1 sprinters.

"Box eight is probably better for Wighton than box one because if he misses the jump from the rails he can get chopped off,'' Pulbrook said.

"But from the outside, even if he misses the start, he can still avoid trouble because he will run in a straight line from the boxes to the first turn.

"I have cut back on his work over the past few weeks and maybe because he is fresher Wighton has been jumping away better.''

Thomas Jay, who opened his Wentworth Park account last Saturday night with a strong win from box six, looks ideally positioned in box one in race five tonight.

Thomas Jay seems assured of a clear run to the first turn as Winxette, in box two, and Tedesco, drawn in three, get wide.

Winxette ran a great race when second to Big Bang Tears in near record time over 515m at Gosford on November 21 and while she has not raced since she is trialling well.

Trainer Ron Field said: "I gave her a post-to-post at Wenty recently and Winxette ran 24.60 which was satisfactory for her first hit-out.

"But she has box two and because she uses a bit of the track I would have preferred to see her drawn wide.''

Thomas Jay has won three of his six races from box one so with Winxette likely to move to the centre of the track he should notch his second city win in four days.

Ritzy Chicki fell at her only Wentworth Park outing but is unbeaten in two subsequent races at Maitland and could lead throughout in tonight's ninth race, a 520m fifth grade.

Ritzy Chicki won in a smart 22.67 over 400m at Maitland on January 25 before scoring in a nippy 25.21 over 450m there on February 8.

"She trialled a reasonable 30.19 over 515m at Gosford last week so has had enough work for the 520 metres at Wenty,'' Alan Proctor, whose wife Christine trains Ritzy Chicki, said.

"Ritzy Chicki has good early speed but although she is likely to get a bit tired we are hoping that from box one she can get away with a break on the rest of the field.''

The irrepressible Royal Turbo will be chasing his 15th Wentworth Park win when he steps out for tonight's 520m Free-For-All.

Royal Turbo scored his 20th success when he won over 400m at Bulli on Saturday and while he is not suited out in box seven he has the early pace to win from any draw.

Zipping Clive, who ran down Royal Turbo to win from box two at Wentworth Park last Wednesday, looms as his toughest opponent again despite his box six draw.
