Azzopardi Blasting His Way Into Wentworth Park

By Jeff Collerson

Myrniong Blaster has won just one of 11 Wentworth Park starts but with a clear run trainer Mario Azzopardi believes his greyhound will lift his strike rate by taking out tonight's opening event.

Myrniong Blaster is awkwardly drawn in box four but comes off a super effort when second to Ninghan Express in a similar 520m fifth grade at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

After bungling the start from box eight, Myrniong Blaster was midfield at the halfway mark but rattled home along the fence to go down by less than two lengths in 30.31.

"I'm not happy about box four but it is better than box eight, because Myrniong Blaster is a terrific railer,'' Azzopardi said.

"So the closer to the inside he is drawn the better it is and he won his only Wentworth Park race from box three.

"Myrniong Blaster's best time at Wenty is 30.32 but he has more ability than that indicates.

"Dapto is his favourite track and when I trial him there he can always break the 30 second mark for the 520m.''

Goulburn trainer Denice Warren could land a winning double at Wentworth Park tonight with Cosmic Series, who has box five in race three, and Smooth Blend, ideally drawn in box eight in race six.

At his only Wentworth Park appearance on October 4 Cosmic Series was slowly away but went fast out wide to be third leaving the back straight.

But the dog, who was having his first Wentworth Park race, "lost'' the home turn and blew his chances of winning before winding up a creditable third.

"Cosmic Series is a very fast dog but he has box five and I would be more confident if he had drawn box eight,'' Warren said.

"His problem is he does not come out too quickly although when he won at his most recent start, at Goulburn, he began better than usual.

"Then he did something he doesn't normally do, he charged up along the rails instead of going around his rivals.''

Smooth Blend should only need to "nail'' the start to win race six, a fourth and fifth grade over 520m.

He made full use of his wide box seven draw when he led most of the way to win at Wentworth Park on December 8 and wasn't headed winning over 440m in the fastest time of the day at Goulburn on January 30.

"Smooth Blend bounces up and down in the boxes but if he is crouching down when the lids lift he gets away well,'' Warren said.

"He has plenty of early speed and is well drawn in box eight.''

Wide runner Cosmic Zesta should be able to overcome his "upside down'' draw and score his first Wentworth Park win in race eight, a 520m fifth grade.

Cosmic Zesta's trainer Geoff Grimwood has been "sweating'' on an outside box for his greyhound at Wentworth Park but the dog did run a great second from box two there last Saturday.

After running wide when third at the first turn, Cosmic Zesta dashed around the second dog to be the runner-up with 250m left to run.

He hung on gamely, finishing five lengths behind the winner, Tullabung Gowdy, who covered the 520m in a sizzling 29.85 and produced breath-taking run-home figures of 11.66 seconds.

If he repeats last Saturday's performance Cosmic Zesta should be too quick for Wednesday's lineup, which does not appear to be capable of edging close to the 30 second barrier.
