Big Month Ahead For Fast Car Driving

By Jeff Collerson

Fast Car Driving's best time of the night performance at Wentworth Park on Saturday may have earned the greyhound a start in next Saturday night's heats of the Group 1 Australian Cup in Melbourne.

Heats will be run over 525m at The Meadows with semi-finals on February 24 and the $250,000 to the winner final on March 3.

Fast Car Driving began smartly from box six to win a Golden Easter Egg Prelude last Saturday night, leading throughout to win by more than nine lengths in a personal best time of 29.80.

"He was due to nail the start like that,'' trainer Chris Carl said later.

"I was thinking of taking him to Bathurst for the Cup heats there next Monday but with track record holder Falcon's Fury likely to tackle that series I am considering going to Melbourne instead.

"Fast Car Driving finished third to Out Of Range in the Silver Chief Classic final at The Meadows on January 5 so he knows his way around the Australian Cup venue.''

Carl has always ranked Fast Car Driving the best of the outstanding December, 2015 litter he has in work, by Kc And All from Subway To Venus.

Fast Car Driving's siblings include Rostered On, runner-up to Out Of Range in the Ladbrokes National Derby on February 3, the highly talented Curtain Call, and Rhythm Section, who gave Carl a winning double at Wenty on Saturday night.

Rhythm Section, considered the "slowest'' of the star quartet, led all the way to win a fifth grade event by just on four lengths in 29.99.

Saturday night's second fastest 520m winner, Miss Splendamiro, will go to Bathurst for the Cup heats on Monday, February 19, following her 29.83 effort at Wentworth Park on Saturday.

Miss Splendamiro registered the most impressive of her four Wentworth Park wins when she came from third early and second on the back straight to win by four lengths from the evergreen Ritza Rossi and pacemaker Jock Colley.

After the race trainer Hank Vanderburg said: "When Miss Splendamiro dwelt at the start tonight I thought she was gone.

"Until now she has had to lead in her races so for her to come from behind, pushing through on the inside of Jock Colley coming to the home bend to reach the lead, was really encouraging.

"She finished third to Ritza Lenny at Wentworth Park on February 3 after trialling 29.85 on the track.

"But I knew she had taken no harm from that run because I trialled her over 535m at Richmond last Tuesday and she recorded 30.45.

"Falcon's Fury set a new track record of 29.24 when he won recently at Bathurst but Miss Splendamiro has trialled 29.40 there so she deserves a crack at the Bathurst Cup.''

Yass trainer Neil Staines also landed a winning double on Saturday night at Wentworth Park, with each of his winners, Tullabung Gowdy and My Country, breaking the 30 second barrier.

Tullabung Gowdy overcame a moderate start to sweep around the leaders and hit the front on the back straight before winning by five lengths in 29.85.

Just 22 minutes later My Country led throughout in 29.93, also scoring by five lengths.

Although Tullabung Gowdy had been unplaced in three previous Wentworth Park starts, Staines has always regarded him as the quickest dog in his kennels.

See you next week!
