Millionaire Max Hoping To Hit The Jackpot

By Jeff Collerson

The move from box one in his Heat to box five in Monday's final should not prevent fastest qualifier Millionaire Max from taking out the 450m Ladbrokes Multimaker at Bathurst.

In last week's Heat Millionaire Max jumped fairly well from box one and despite veering to the centre of the track and colliding, he reached the lead and careered away to win by over eight lengths in a blistering 25.46.

That time was only .08 seconds outside the Bathurst 450m record, held by Marbo's Magic, the 2016 Group 2 Maitland Gold Cup victor and a winner of 27 from 46 races.

Millionaire Max's middle draw in the final could be beneficial providing he begins cleanly, and the John Buttsworth-trained speedster should enhance his tally to five wins and two placings from eight starts.

Monday afternoon's Bathurst card also features two strong Heats of Ladbrokes Bathurst GBOTA Maiden Series over 520m.

Heat one looks especially competitive but the best drawn runner is the Sam Sultana-trained Sling A Chevy, who has box eight.

Sling A Chevy is unraced but at his latest public appearance he overcame a severe collision at box rise to win a 520m Bathurst trial in 30.38, fastest time of the day.

Sling A Chevy would have gone far quicker had he not veered sharply to the right when the boxes opened, coming out of box three and colliding heavily with the Ray Smith-trained Cyril Figgis, who had drawn five.

Despite that hefty bump Sling A Chevy raced away to win easily, and should make full use of his outside draw this afternoon.

Other chances in this Heat are Cyril Figgis (box five), Zipping Kretch (seven), Private Nangar (three) and Djay Holden (one).

Djay Holden, trained by Sam Sultana's brother Vic, was a solid second at his race debut over 450m at Bathurst on January 22 and will relish the move from box six to the rails, along with additional 70m of today's race.

In Heat two the Hank Vanderburg-trained Diddilee (box five) and Nangar Blaze (six) from the Dennis Barnes kennel, look the form standouts.

They have won 450m performance trials in smart times of 26.06 and 25.94 respectively but their toughest opponent, if he secures a start, should be first reserve, Metallic Flash.

A kennelmate of champion sprinter Falcon's Fury, Metallic Flash is unbeaten in three performance trials at Bathurst and Dubbo and recorded a slick 30 second run in a 516m test at Dubbo at his most recent appearance.

Precious Sal, fresh from breaking the Maitland 400m record, ran an outstanding trial for the up-coming group 2 Maitland Gold Cup with a blistering 450m win there on Thursday.

Trained in Queensland by Darren Russell, Precious Sal led throughout from box one and went to the line stoutly, proving the extra 50m, the Maitland Gold Cup distance, held no fears for her.

Precious Sal zoomed over the trip in 24.86, which compares well with Old Spice's track record of 24.68.

Precious Sal was the first leg of a winning double for Russell, with Fab Fit scoring her 10th win in 28 starts with a slick 24.94sec victory over 450m later on Thursday's Maitland card.

Darren Russell grew up in the Sydney suburb of Balmain where, as a teenager, he learned the greyhound trade while assisting Bobby Riley, trainer of top notch Harold Park sprinters Market Row and Probing.

Russell is setting Precious Gal, who has now had five wins and a second from her past six starts, Fab Fit, and Go Lassie Go, the star of his strong team, for the Maitland Cup Heats on April 5.

Go Lassie Go broke the Casino 411m track record before notching her 21st win in 47 outings with a smart 431m Ipswich win last Tuesday.
